We have changed cars from a Kia Sedona (manual) to a Chrystler Grand Voyager (automatic).

Towing with the automatic seems like a whole other ball game. We have never owned an automatic before so are getting to grips with general driving as well as towing with it.

Any helpful tips and advice on how to best tow with an automatic? So far it has felt crap compared to the manual.

We have all the usual gears plus a L and a 3 gear. The car had cruise control as an option.

The fluid drive torque converter will cushon any transmission acceleration 'jolts', perhaps this is the difference you perceive?

PS

Auto and cruise control in my opinion is a perfect combination! Just use the cruise control whenever you can and let the auto take care of the gear it wants. On a run, I drive with my fingers on the cruise control buttons probably more than I do with my foot on the accelerator pedal. When I want to slow down, I either press the 'minus' button or just 'kick' the cruise control out with a tiny momentary touch on the brake pedal. To speed up, use the 'faster' button or the 'resume' button.

I find this most economical as the cruise control is continuously making tiny adjustments that any human being could never do.

Yeah the cruise control was nice :) my hubby tends to drive with a constantly flexing foot (he will disagree...) and it makes me feel sick sometimes and on the old car it would make the turbo keep powering on and off all the time (very noisy and irritating as well as caning the fuel).

The main problem was on the inclines and declines and through the country lanes. It all just felt Not Right, like the revs get to high before a change up and too low before a change down. You get that feeling of when a gear change should happen if you were driving a menual and the automatic does things differently.

We tried the 3 gear a bit and that made the engine run at higher revs but the revs were constant rather than constant changing about so although there was a sense maybe if we was in an manual we'd have been putting the car in a higher gear at least it wasn't constantly changing up and down through the gears. There is always that fear you are doing it wrong and going to break the car :-S

Maybe I am just a control freak ;-)

I cannot imagine a circumstance where you are in danger of breaking anything.

Have fun!

If your auto is constantly changing up and down, it is either faulty or you are driving at the wrong speed. I used to have an auto which, under normal driving, changed into top gear at about 40mph. However, trying to drive at 40mph would result in the gears changing up and down, depending on the hills

Maybe the wrong speed? we tend to stick to a near 60 on the motorway slowing down as the traffic dictates. It was journey with a lot of hills and it just felt like car didn't cope as well as the manual. I just felt like we could have been hadling the car better and getting better performance from it. Didn't help on the way back no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get the 'van loaded up just right and we were quite bouncy. Odd really as I took weight out of the van and transferred it to the car so we were travelling lighter on the 'van side than normal.

With the voyager you will notice that the auto box changes to second fairly quickly, At thirty mph it goes into 3rd. 40mph it goes into 4th gear, they are hi reving to wards any other auto i have driven, If it is up and down the box from 4th to 3rd, leave it in 3rd till it can manage 4th gear, this will keep the auto fluid cooler. When you are on a flat run then put the cruise control in.

This might explain why it FEELS so weird to me then. I change through my gears on a manual much sooner than that. I'm in 4th gear pretty quickly or I'd be contantly in third gear and I change back down pretty late when slowing for traffic etc. This sounds like the opposite 'style' to the chrystler?

Have you ever had those dreams where you are driving a car but it doesn't seem to operate under your control it seems to go too fast or too slow and its like a demented dodgem as opposed to an actual car with proper pedals and steering. This car makes me feel like that. The hubby loves it. I however loved my Kia I always felt really confident driving it and parking it. I am constantly on edge driving this one due to the mad dodgem feeling.

A top tip always thump your left leg when you get in, to stop yourself from going through the windscreen when you try to put the none existent clutch in and stamp on the break instead

Only trouble with this voyager, No trip tronic gear box, and the auto box does not slow you down like most autos.

I have auto and would never go back to manual for towing. The secret of driving Auto is use a light right foot, not down hard on accelerator as this will only keep it in lower gears longer and the engine revving away.

you can nurse these voyagers. But, these silly gear boxes wont change gear until a certain speed is reached,For a 2.8 turbo engine, it wont go into 4th till you reach 40 mph is a joke, The rev`s are high for my liking for the size of the engine. This is where i miss the trip tronic on this car,You cant change up or down, The only thing you can do with this gear box is select 3rd gear when pulling away, this will go 1st 2nd 3rd only, stopping the box going into 4th,This is only helpful by stopping the box going into 3rd and 4th like a yo yo,making the transmission oil hot when towing.Plus when you take your foot off, the car just rolls along and not slowing the car down, having to use the brakes more than normal autos,This is just like having a manual gearbox putting it in neutral when going down hill or stopping then having to use the brakes,Therefore I dont think you have full control of the car especially when towing.
To look at the size of the car a 7 seater and engine size,2.8ltr this car can only pull 1600kg but it has plenty of power.Another thing with these cars, Dont keep your foot on the brake pedal after you have used the brakes alot,(heavy braking) The brakes disc`s warp and crack looking at them! The pads are very hot, and transmit heat into one spot of the brake disc, I guess this goes for any vehicle.

I think it's that car rolling along and not changing down thing that invokes the mad dodgem dream effect. I know on some roads where I live when just normal driving in my manual there are roads that are a 50 and I go into 5th gear for but then change down to 4th for more control and responsiveness at certain parts. The voyager just feels like a boat being thrown about on the ocean. I guess the answer is drive slower not just when towing but I'm not happy about driving around with mahhoosive snakes of angry traffic building up behind me on the quicker roads round here.

All very interesting comments guys/gals. Our own situation is that I needed to go auto due to a severely arthritic left ankle, got impossible to use a clutch without the inability to walk for a few minutes. So we changed the car for an auto and what a difference. OH used to hate the idea but she drives the car brilliantly and has admitted it is so much easier.
Towing? Great. The Saab has a 'slush' box (ie torque converter as opposed to twin clutch). The tranny is a 6-speed with manual override and steering wheel buttons. I fully agree with birdman101 regarding light right foot. This ensures the engine does not rev its nuts off, and the 'box does not keep changing up and down. Also I find that in slow moving traffic jams, I stick it in manual 1st and I find that way I don't have to hold back the car on the brakes so much, with or without the caravan on. Of course, with a semi-auto it is great to be able to use the manual facility on steep downhill stretches with a 'van on but so far we have not had to do this. Another advantage of auto of course is the ability to fully concentrate on everything while towing without messing with clutch and gears - it is quite enough to have to make allowances for all the twerps who try to cut one up when one is towing.
On the open roads, into cruise and away we go. Due to the total weight of the outfit and the high gearing (to keep in the power band I would have to be doing well over 70 for the car to be in 6th) the car does not get into 6th but even in 5th the consumption is what I consider very reasonable at just under 30mpg cruising at around 60. Our previous manual Saab used to do just over 30mpg in similar circumstances, and used to record the same on the read out whether in 5th or 6th; it always felt more at ease in 5th so we used to only opo it in 6th on very flat or downhill stretches.
Another good comment, from Bill, was the one regarding brakes - for the sake of the discs, whether towing or not, I always slip the car into neutral at traffic stops and after 2 or 3 seconds when the blocker comes on it only takes a quick dab on the brake pedal to enable drive to be selected.
