Hi all,
New to camping as such I'm looking for a trailer. As luck would have it a work friend has a trailer he no longer needs and is willing to let me have it for free. Now it's a custom made one that has been very well looked after. New wheel bearings. Tyres and metal work. The guy who owns is it a very good machine mechanic so I know it's had TLC. Thing is I've been reading about the new legislation that came in in 2012. I was wondering his it relates to small trailers. The box is 5'X 4'. From what I can see nothing should effect me but wondered if anyone understands the legislation a little better to know if I fall foul of any of it.
You will be ok to tow a small trailer on a post '97 licence if thats what you mean. If its unbraked, then don't load it to exceed you car max unbraked trailer weight as noted in car handbook. If it is homemade be aware that some breakdown insurance co's require a commercially produced(ie not home made)trailer in case of call out & if you are towing in France, I think a manufacturer's plate is required.
Hi, thanks for the reply. The licence bit I was aware but the other stuff didn't even enter my head so thanks for that. Another bit I read in the legislation in relation to fog lights. I know some police can be a bit pedantic. It said a bout trailers over 1.3M requiring a fog light. The running board on this trailer doesn't have one but does the width refer to just the box or does it include the wheels, or am I worrying over nothing?
As tentz concurred it is the full width including wheels. Anything exceeding 1.3M needs the fog
Iight. Page 17.
Not a problem. I can fit a fog light.just didnt want together caught by a jobs worth .
