I am thinking of changing my car to an automatic, at present I have MG Rover 2 ltre diesel manual, but thought about changing to a similar engine size automatic.Do they pull ok with a caravan on the back related to the weight of the vehicle or better sticking to a manual, the Mg is brilliant car but getting long in the tooth. Thanks.
As you will note from my "Outfit", I have a Skoda with DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox).
I've only driven autos since the mid 1970s and the V.A.G (Volkswagen Automotive Group) DSG system works differently from the 'fluid drive torque converter' types fitted by almost all other manufacturers, it hardly uses any more fuel , and is the best auto I've ever had. Do your own research.
Recently I changed towcars from a Mondeo 2.0 TDCi manual 163ps to Mondeo 2.0 TDCI powershift (similar to VW DSG) 140ps & towing is so much easier with the powershift. I have not noticed any performance drop even though I am 23ps down. The lower power model has better low down torque.
The instant gearchanges either automatic or selected manually are brilliant as you don't loose speed on hills.
I am towing 1480kg MPTLM.
I would agree I tow with Nissan navara auto although it is 3lt V6
We pull a big twin axle and have never had a problem. No loss of speed on hill climbs and to be fair don't really notice a great deal of difference in mpg, I do 25k miles a year with out the van on the back and average about 28 mtg.
