We're hopefully looking to change our car later this year and have our eyes on either the Kia Sorento and the Sportage.

But, we'd like some info on them first....

What is the rear leg room like in each car?

As we have 'growing' twin boys, and at this rate, they'll be taller than both of us VERY soon, so need to look at that.

Also, Road Tax. How does that work, they all state different bands for different ages of vehicle?

And boot space, how big are they really? Can you get a lot in, or do you have to put much more in the 'van when it comes to towing?

You will probably get response if you state what models you are considering and whether new or s/hand, what year, manual or Auto.

we just got the sportage and with the front seats fully back our two boys 12 and 15 have all the room they need eldest is getting quite tall now and his knees dont touch the front seats so they love the room i think you would be ok with either space wise as for the boot it`s smaller than our old vectra but it still big enough for a lot of gear
road tax is worked out on the emissions of the car i think lower the emissions lower the tax

It's just a general query / comparison between the two really. But I would like an auto for my next car.

It would be second hand unless I win the lottery.

But the road tax is the confusing bit I've found, some are mega bucks, while others quote 'Euro 4' the same as our Mondeo, so therefore lower tax.

Is there specific year that these lower emission cars came in?

Also, if the car already has a towbar, how do I know if it isn't 'tired' or worn out? Is there a test to check the auto box?

We have had two of the older model Sorentos and now have a 62 reg KX2, both models have plenty of legroom in the rear.
Older models are 2.5 diesel, and are £360 road tax for a manual, more for autos.
Our current one is a 2.2 diesel,manual, tax is a bit lower.
The current models are 7 seat, but we will probably not use that!
Plenty of room for 4 adults in ours though.

take the family to the showroom and sit in the car    look at the brochure for the other info and bingo   i havebeen going round the various garages and I take out my tape measure to make sure the boot comes up to scratch     it amuses me no end to see how the salesman reacts

Have you considered the Kia Sedona ? We have a 2010 model. Same engine as the Sorento, 2.2 CRDI.   we have done 62k trouble free miles in ours, only needing a set of tyres and a set of pads all around ! We have it serviced every 10k miles, and never had a days problem. It tows like a dream, we dont use the extra 2 seats in the boot as we have dogs. Each seat is individual and reclines, leg room is amazing ! I get 45mpg combined solo, and around 30mpg towing.

Not a Sedona, sorry.

I was looking at sorentos and sportages for the 4x4 capabilities really and for a few other reasons.
