Hi. We've just changed to a 2003 Bailey Pageant Bordeaux, MRO 1123Kg, MTPLM 1345Kg. My Vectra sri is underweight to safely pull this. I've considered Citroen C5 110 Hdi's, Mondeo diesel, Volvo v70 diesel, and more !!! Only want to spend a grand. The C5 appeals, but seems close on weight. I like the self levelling suspension, but is it reliable. Would prefer diesel for economy. Also manual or auto...
A few questions, but thanks in advance.
Really like this site, all 3 holidays taken have been researched and booked from ukcampsite.co.uk

I wouldnt touch a C5 for £1000 money.

Mondeo diesel, Beware that a clutch/DMF is £600 - £800 and the injectors cost approx £150 each for refurbished ones. And there are plenty of sellers that do a crappy job.

C5 will be close to 100% of the vans weight.

Try and find a Skoda superb 1.9 tdi  130 bhp you should get one but with high miles but the engines are bulletproof, known to pass 500,000 miles easily, there will be some on auto trader

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/search/used/cars/skoda/superb/postcode/td12ly/radius/1500/engine-size-cars/1-7l_to_1-9l/fuel-type/diesel/onesearchad/used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew/sort/default/body-type/saloon

dont forget you can knock the dealers down or trade in your vectra

We tow a bailey ranger 540/6 with ours, and it returns 35 plus when towing and well over 50 solo

Forgot to mention, full licence since 1982. I'm a coach driver used to driving 40ft (12m)......ok it doesn't bend like car/caravan combo. Coach reverses properly too, not used to opposite reverse angles for caravans.
Wife insists that 4x4 is the way to go, but I'm concerned about mpg on the 48 weeks when not towing.

I've now seen a 2002 Kia Sportage 2.0 xse 5 door.
Has the weight ratio to tow, and in budget.
Anyone recommend

Kia sportage or Sorento will tow it(used to have a Burgundy, Sorrie pulled it effortlessly) plus you get 7 years warranty on the newer ones so a recent used one will have a fair bit of warranty.

There are the Hyundai alternatives to, ix 35 or Santa Fe. Tucson quite good too apparantly.(5 year warranty on Hyundai).

I tow our Bailey Pageant 1350 MGW with our Kia Sedona and love it - ours is the 2010 model, but the cars been around for sometime and you should be able to pick up an older one for good money.

Happy with my Mondeo. Don't be put off by the scaremongery about dmf/clutch and injectors. The duratorq engine is no less reliable than any other and at £1k you'll be looking at a 150k motor which chances are will have had these bits replaced.
