Hi we are just about to change our car to a kia sportage 2.0ltr diesel .We have a fleetwood colchester 2002 500 eb and are not sure what the noesweight is on the van we do have 2 gas bottles in it and a spare wheel is secured to the inside alsp bits and bobs like toilet fluid and awning pegs We did have it checked years ago and it was ok with our honda crv but i think there have been bits and pieces added like you do ,and its not been checked as we dont know how to use the noseweight gague it was the service guy that used it .Any help would be apprecisted as we have been told noseweight is important,Yet a friend of ours from many years ago never checked his noseweight .All he said was as long as the heavy stuff is over the axle and it looks level its ok !!!! He never had any trouble ,but we would rather not take the chance

You either buy a proper noseweight gauge or use bathroom scales & a couple of bits of 4x2 cut to size. You also need the caravan on firm level ground. If your drive is not that a supermkt car park is ok. Park caravan on jockey wheel with nose up with corner steadies up(ie off ground)& handbrake on.

If you are using bathroom scales place 1 piece of wood across scales & the other vertical under hitch then wind up jockey wheel until off ground so full weight of hitch is on the wood with caravan level & read off weight. If you pay out for proper noseweight gauge the procedure is same with gauge under hitch & caravan should be level when you weigh. When you read off weight, caravan is standing just on wheels with hitch on weighing device if you see what I mean.

Regards, Jack+Jon.

The Milenco noseweight gauge is the best on the market as it is calibrated to a European standard so you are investing in a quality product that will be accuarate for many years come. See the link below which explains in detail more about the gauge but furthermore watch the video clip at the bottom which shows you exactly how to use it as well.

http://www.milenco.com/products/noseweight-gauge/

The recommended noseweight should be around 7% of the caravans MTPLM (laden weight) but you need to focus more on what the vehicle handbook advises regarding the maximum weight allowed and work on this figure because if the noseweight is too heavy it will put excess pressure on the rear springs and too light the outfit is likely to be unstable.

The weight of a gas bottle is stamped on the outside of the cylinder if you need to check but a 6kg. propane steel cylinder is roughly about twice the weight of a Calor lite which means that 2 x Calor lite = 1 x standard steel one so the 7 kg. Butane cylinder would be slightly heavier.
