The 4X4 tow car I am about to get, says it will tow up to 1500Kg.

How does that work when the Kerb Weight excluding the driver only weighs 1294Kg?

A technical figure, the max weight the car can move on an 8% gradient. 4x4s generally have high max tow weight compared with unladen weight due to extra grip presumably.

Nothing to do with what is safe to tow, car manufacturer does not get involved in this, that is driver's decision based on how trailer might be affected by cross winds etc. This is why suggestion is 85% of kerbweight for caravan.

The cars towing limit also includes the structure of the car, suspension, towbar mounting points, manual or auto gear box as well as the ability to start on an 8% hill.
If you say the car K/weight is 1,294kg add 75kg driver / 90% tank of fuel = 1,369kg x 0.85 = 1,163kg is the MTPLM of caravan to tow at 85% ratio.

My Octavia has a tow limit of 1,600kg, MTPLM for the caravan 1,230kg giving a ratio of 82%

You could tow a Sprite Alpine 4, your ratio would be just under 90%.

Thank you both.

The van is under the 85% kerb weight even without the driver and fuel. I wanted a car with extra oomph, but just wondered why the difference in kerb weight/tow weight.

Some vehicle manufacturers do state that the towing limit exceeds the vehicle's kerbweight but this is due to the vehicle design and structure etc. not from a road safety aspect but in some cases the towball can have quite a low downwards weight limit due to the capabilty of the rear springs and suspension. My Volvo V50 (D5) is a typical example of this as the kerbweight is 1568 kgs. and has a towing limit of 1500 kgs. (which is just under) but only has a towball weight limit of 75 kgs. As in your case, the vehicle kerbweight is much lower than the specified towing limit but this can often mis-lead people (especially novices) into thinking that their towing vehicle is built like more like a tank. This in turn could very well be contributing to over-turned caravans on the motorway due to the lack of knowledge and understanding of a well balanced and stable outfit thus by using just the manufacters towing figures alone.

Land Rover Discovery 2 has a kerb weight of 2.2 tonnes (varies with model & engine type) but has a maximum towing weight of 3.5 tonnes.

Although I have the data on the weights for my new Dacia Duster 4X4, I do not, as yet, have any info on the tow ball nose weight and this is something I will need to find out.

My van's nose weight should be 76Kg.

Found the Towball nose weight for the Dacia on the Caravan Club website.

On mine, the weight is 75Kg.
The 7% nose weight of my van would be 76.09Kg.

So that all works out well.

The recommended noseweight is between 5% - 7% of the caravan MTPLM, so with the cars limit, you are OK with 75kg.

Good report about the Dacia in the 2013 towcar awards.

With my caravan, 7% would be 86kg my car noseweight limit is 75kg, so works out at just over 6%.
