Hi,

Having just got our first caravan I'm being very cautious about things.

Having put the stuff in it that will live in it, gas bottles/awning/etc I had to shift stuff between the front storage compartment and under the rear bunks to get the nose weight within the limit for my car.

What concerns me a bit is the wife doing her usual and packing most of the contents of our house into the boot and this affecting handling. Does the fact that the boot sits over the rear axle of the car negate most of this ?

Ta.

If you have the maximum nose weight on the car i would have thought that would be it, nothing in the boot.
If you have max nose weight then load up the car would this not overload the cars axle ??????
Hopefully the experts in this question will explain in more correct detail

The caravan noseweight also becomes part of the cars payload when on the towball, what is the cars payload? If you overload the rear of the car and the back end drops, it can affect the front wheels, traction, steering and braking. The axle limit could also be overloaded.

I have a 600kg payload, 75kg is taken up with the noseweight, another 40kg is taken up with the towbar and optional steel spare wheel, (dealer fit and not included in the cars mass in service) then 35kg for bikes on the roof, 25kg steel awning poles, gas bottle (secure and upright), BBQ, weight soon adds up before the passengers get in!

That makes sense, thanks.

Max loading weight is 715kg, so minus the nose weight (75KG) and towbar weight (Using the 40kg you've stated) I've got 600kg to play with which seems quite a lot so I'll work on 500 just to be on the safe side.

I'll tell the wife 200 then I might stand a chance of not going over

What car do you have?

Dont forget that 600kg also includes passengers and fuel etc. But that 600kg is spread across the 2 axles.
Where loading the boot is just adding it to the rear and not the front.

I thought the same with my Mondeo, 500kg loading limit.

But add 4 passengers at 75kg each + 75kg of noseweight and you dont have a lot to play with.

Mondeo Estate.

Maybe 200kg is not a bad limit to set after all !

Licensed in 1984 so I'm fine up to 8.5 tonnes from memory.
