OK, so after weeks of poring over my spreadsheets, comparing noseweights, pondering over BHP vs torque, stressing over whether SLS will bring appreciable benefits to my towing life, fretting about whether a towing match of 90% would really be noticeably worse than one of 85%, wondering whether I could settle to driving an automatic rather than a manual ... I finally decided that I need a 7 seater Hyundai Santa Fe..

But where the devil are they all hiding?!  I don't particularly want to buy from a dealer - I'd much prefer a private sale, and I thought there'd be loads for me to choose from.  Motors.co.uk came up with 1 in my price range and that had 5 seats not 7 so no good, Preloved managed1 - but the advert is well out of date, Gumtree just the1, eBay listings were all from dealers, and Autotrader just has a handful of private sales.  And now I've started looking, it's pretty rare to see them out and about..

So did nobody buy them in the first place?  Are you all just hanging on to them cos you love them so much and you'll happily run them into the ground?  Are they all being snapped up and shipped elsewhere?  Release your Santa Fes - I want to have a selection to pick from :-)

Penguin - yes, you were one of the ones who helped convince me :-)

Brownie - looks like we were shopping in the same area if you are west yorks based too!I think I need to up my budget - though I've already inched it up a couple of times! We need it before we go away in August so we have to find one, get tow bar fitted and hopefully fit in a test weekend before then...

yes white rose searched the whole of yorkshire we went over to roachdale to look at one at a dealer but that was nice outside but looked like the previous owner kept sheep in it for a year
we got a kia sportage instead we love it we ended up just telling the dealer what we wanted and they found us it and brought it for us to look at sorted the towbar everything it was ready to hitch the van up when we picked it up
we blew our budget too but the car is newer than we started looking at

Bought our '06 one at BCA auction at Belle Vue, Manchester, a week before christmas 2010. Took me weeks to find.

Third car I have bought at auctions. All have served us well.

63k miles. A bit scuffed inside and out but polished up easily.
Price was £8.3k and was about 2k less than advertised at dealers at the time.

GSI CRTD. 5 seats. 2.2d. 2 wheel drive; not 4. MPG is better.
Just coming up to 95k miles.

Has been a fantastic car. Have done some big trips. Tows like a train.

Just love it. (Maybe you had guessed).

I do most of my own maintenance and find it the best engineered and easiest car to work on that I have ever had.

2 front wheel brake discs and pads - 30 minutes the lot!

It came up on the BCA website the night before the auction. Just decided to do it. Went - Looked - Decided my top price. Bidding against one dealer (dealers rarely go as high as private buyer. They must keep a good margin in the deal). Delivered following day to Cannock for £70. Sorted.

Much better than my previous Volvo V70 for towing.

It doesn't surprise me at all that they are scarce as hen's teeth (slightly annoying as I hope to get one in time for next season!). My father drove literally hundreds of cars in 55 years' driving (he stopped for sleep and stuff, occasionally ;) ), including holding an HGV licence. From E-types and 3.8MKII jags to Datsuns, Mazdas and many things in between. He loved cars and loved driving, I can only guess at how many hundreds of thousands of miles he drove. The car he owned the longest? An 06 plate silver Santa Fé very similar to the photgraph above. He didn't tow with it, but if it was good enough for him, it'll do me nicely :D

The new model that came out in October last year was/is only available in low numbers as Hyundai seem to be concentrating on the Asia/Australia markets. Hence those who have them may be holding out for a better supply.

Then there are those who like what they have but don't like the new model, or the sizeable price increase (5k on a like-for-like basis).

We ended up getting ours (7 seat auto premium) from a dealer, who used the official lines to get hold of it. 1 year old, 12k miles, £20k, and a decent trade-in on the previous car.

Nelmo - yours looks fab, do let me know if you fancy knocking two or three grand off the asking price, will you

Thank you all for your suggestions - Uxb, you've just set me off looking at all the auction sites, but there's not a great deal there either. Perhaps I'm going to have to investigate the dealers after all ... :-(

According to Mr J. Clarkson they are all stuck in fields.

This is a quote from his review;

"Can it go off road? Yes, but not very far. With a part-time four-wheel-drive system, it’ll get your caravan into a field. But it probably won’t get it out again. Which is a good thing for the rest of us."

Problem solved.

Try a Sorento, the 2010 model onwards is basically the same car. It was facelifted in 2013.They have 7 year guarantee which is transferable.

Sorento up to 2010 is an awesome towcar, but a bit thirstier, autos are in high tax bracket.
