Just got back from 7 week tour down as far as Dubrovnik towing our 544 Challenger Sport 1435Kilos with a 2009 Volvo V70 2.0D and thought I should post up that the car was faultless. I couldn't find much, if any info on this car prior to buying as most people seem to go for the 2.4Lso just putting it out there for anyone looking to change cars. The MPG is better than the larger engine and the fairly high torque was more than adequate.
Hi Big Al,
I can't give you a precise figure but think its above 30mpg which I think is fine. During the period before towing I was getting about 43mpg in mixed driving conditions. The official figure is I think 47mpg so I was happy with the reality figure.
I drove on motorways mainly on cruise and on the flat in sixth at 60-65 it generally was OK but on inclines or definitely hills you did need to change down.
I did mention in my post that it was a challenger sport 544 at 1435Kilos
The reason I just said faultless in my post was that the car behaved very well, never seemed to be labouring and considering that it also had a heavy bike rack and awning among other things stowed in the boot itgave no cause for concern.
I would also mention that this particular engine despite already having a very good torque figure can easily be chipped to give an even higher BHP and torque although based on my trip I doubt I will bother.

Hi i had the volvo v70 2.0 ltr and again found it faultless pulling the caravan, although the previous car a ford focus II 2.0 ltr estate (2006) i considered to pull the van alot better. Both has the same engine..
Our van is 1300 kgs fully loaded, and with 2 adults and 2 kids and 1 dog. Generally got 25 - 30 mpg towing on the motorway, flats in 5th or 6th and hills in 5th no problems. the only issue i had with it was the seating which i did find over a long distance comfortable.
Got an Antara now 2.2 ltr diesel tows even better but loose a considerable amount of luggage space.
Thanks for the info Davet, I have been considering changing my vehicle for the V70 and looking at the 2.4 but may look at the 2ltr now. I was wondering how reliable they were ?
Hi Agri,
Had mine for just under a year with no problems. I think the engine is a fairly bullet proof piece of kit fitted to several makes of cars for many years so no problems there. As for the rest of the vehicle as you were considering a V70 anyway then I doubt any difference in reliability. I test drove a 2.4 auto and found the engine to be generally noisier than the 2L and the MPG on the 2L manual is considerably better. I'm not sure about other costs (tax/insurance) I think buying a car to tow with is always a compromise as you are not towing with it for the majority of the time. Ideally we would all like a big, powerful 4x4 to tow and a small, economical car the rest of the time but life is not that obliging to most of us.
I would suggest you test drive a 2L and do an outfit match on line with your van and see if it ticks the boxes.
