Does anyone tow with any VW with this engine & auto gear box? Just want to know what sort of mpg I can expect before I buy a towbar. Have a Discovery 3 but it's a bit thirsty towing long distances. I have a 'van weighing 900Kg unladen. Thanks
I have a Skoda Octavia which has the same VW 2.0TDI engine, is it the PD or CR? I have the CR or common rail 140ps or 138bhp; they are very good, quite, smooth and with a good torque 320nm/1,750-2,500rpm.
The Octavia has a mass in service / kerbweight of 1,495kg and I tow a Sprite Alpine 4 MTPLM of 1,230kg. It pulls well and takes hills with ease.
Solo I can get 60mpg taking it easy, towing 33-35 mpg. I do have a manual gearbox and I understand with an auto you may get slightly less mpg.
Thanks for that. Mine's an '08 Jetta and it does 55.4 mpg locally (rural Inverness-shire) and 62.5 on a run at 70mph. It goes very well and I believe the DSG can be more economical than a manual, unlike most other automatics. I wouldn't go back to a manual for anything. I've had several VW's, mostly Passats 1.9, 2.8 auto and manual and this present one is the most economical yet, more so than my wife's old '06 Fiat Punto 1.2 diesel manual.. I was thinking 35mpg when towing would be 'about right'. Many thanks, Ed.
