Hi, pretty new to towing (approx 1 year) I am about to go on my longest tow yet, from Newark on Trent in notts to bowness on Windermere, I tow a 5 berth abi marauder sportique with a Renault Laguna 1.9 diesel. Any tips on best route or roads to avoid would be appreciated, my sat nav is telling me A1 for 62 miles then M62 for 35 miles then M61 for 52 miles then M6 for 20 and A 590 for 36 miles. A few mates have told me this is a complicated route and I should go straight up A1 to scotch corner then a66 a685 and m6 and a590... Any advice would be great.

Your mates route is further, involves more A roads some of which are single carriageway and a bit windy, I would go the satnav way. On a point of interest the M61 is a lot shorter than 52 miles, I would have thought it was 20 miles of M61 and 52 miles of M6

Providing you are not going to be around j20 on the M62 before 10am or around 5pm then your route is unlikely to be very busy, although there is a section around Leeds through to Brighoise that is restricted to 50mph at the moment.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

look on google maps just had a look they say 180 miles a1, m62,m6 and 590 3hrs 1 minute,

have a look at using A1, M62, M66, A56. M65, M6, A590, it is all dual carriagway/, motorway until you get to the Gate Inn on the roundabout on A590 which is approx 10 miles from Bowness. You could take the first exit (B5284) at this roundabout and follow the road staright into Bowness but it is a  bittwsity and quite narrow in places,

Using the M66 and M65 avoids any holds up at the M60/M61 junction

Those hold ups only happen at peak of the morning or peek hours at tea time. Going round the m66 and m65 adds distance and time onto the journey.

Hi we live north manchester and join the motorway network at junc 17 M60, and regularly take the van up to the lakes, On a a good run M60 , M61, M6 then Junction 36 for south lakes A590, takes about 1hr and 20 mins to Kendal (65 miles) and windermere (77 mile) is 12miles further on. In busy times it difficult getting off the M61 onto the M6. Otherwise Its a good run.

The A590 road into Windermere can also be a bit of a pig as tail backs often get to be a couple of miles long south of Windermere. Single road through the town with major junctions off.

From Newark I would tend to go A1 to M82, then west until M61, north to M6 and onto Junction 36 for A590. Sadly there is not other way round it, getting to Windermere, from the south with a van and being a relatively new tower.

Using the M66 and then M65 towards M6 negates nothing as you still have to join a 1 mile or so of the M61 to get onto the M6, or go one junction futher on M65 and get on M6 here but traffic could also be slow here too.

What time of day are you looking at leaving Newark.

Just a suggestion, but whenever I have a longish trip I get everything packed and hitched up the night before, so on the day I can just get in and go.

For me, there is nothing worse than arriving on site late and frustrated. I like to leave around first light, so that if things take longer than expected, I still get pitched up some time in the afternoon in time for tea and a beer!

Personally I would come off the M6 at j36  onto A590 until Brettagh holt roundabout. Then instead of taking the exit to A590, (Barrow in furness) keep going (the road becomes the A591 at this junction) . Keep following the A591 Do Not take the turn off for Kendal. This will bring you to the north of Windermere Town Follow signs for Windermere/ Bowness. A591 is still not a brilliant road but it's better than A590 to Newby Bridge then A592 to Bowness, which is a horrible road solo let alone towing.

The Caravan Club website has a route planner that is free to use (You don't have to be a member) and specific for caravans - I have used it several times - it aviods little roads etc.
