If you go to any motor factors they should be able to make you one up immediately in a matter of minutes. Just remember to take your necessary documents with you otherwise they will refuse to make one up for you.
Can't say for sure about the legality of number plates from ebay.
Many motor accessory shops will make up number plates for you. But you MUST present your V5 registration doc and Driving License to prove ownership and identity.
ok, thanks for advice, just a bit confused as to what difference is?? Nice to know car shops will do them straight away as will have a week from collecting car to going away!
Some of the ebay ones are for "show use" eg not legal for using on the road. Anyone making plates should be checking the logbook though to make sure the correct reg is made up, and to enter the details into their book/computer should the plate be used for anything dodgy, plates must have some markings to identify who made it now.

I get mine off ebay, Why give Halfords £20 when i can get a set for £6.
All numberplate makers need to be registered. Numberplate misuse is a real problem: people using them in London to avoid congestion charge; dodgy cars with false plates; use in crime, and other reasons.
I once had a numberplate taken from my motor; reported it to the police to ensure against possible false claims, and got replacement made up at local factors, with all proper documentation. Next time I went to pick someone up at Heathrow got pulled over by airport police: automatic recognition had picked up reported number. Having demonstrated I was proper owner, I was courteously released.
To get to the point, would I buy a cheap plate off Ebay? Only if I could be sure it was legit!
The plates are legit. Fully BS marked and with the makers details/postcode.
Fully legal. You wont get any issue fitting them as long as you dont ask for illegal spacing etc.
The issues is they sell them as show plates to avoid the issue of having to give your details.

am sticking to getting them from Halfords or a proper shop, not risking fines, getting pulled over or anything. Unnecessary stress I reckon!
Why?
The plates are completely legal, the law doesn't say you cannot buy from an on-line shop. The law requires a certain size, shape and colour and the letters/numerals are to be a certain style.
If they comply and are BS AU marked, you can't be pulled for anything.
I would never buy number plates from halfords they charge so much money even with my trade card only 10p off a £15 each plate where local motor factors are around £9 each and cheaper off eBay, they are all exactly the same and all legal, it just depends how quick you need them.
