The grinding noise is 'feedback' from the brakes, it's telling you there's something up...
So.... How long is it now since you changed the discs and pads? Has it just started doing it since 'bedding in?
I don't know X-trail pads, but do they have the 'wire' for the wear sensor running from edge to centre, or does it come in from the rear?
My dad had a problem on his VW Golf, the 'lip' on the edge of the disc cut the wear sensor wire bringing on a warning on the dash display.
Is the ABS sensor 'ring' behind the discs in good nick? These can 'swell' as they rust, damaging the ABS sensor - again bringing on a dashboard warning.
Or could it be as simple as someone not tightening up all the bolts properly, letting the calliper slop about?
------------- Damned if I do...
Damned if I don't!!!!
