hi does anyone out there tow with a rover 75 1.8 petrol automatic if there is i would like to know how they perform thanks for any help

If the Rover 75 1800 petrol has the same engine as the Freelander 1.8 then avoid like the plague as they have a common problem of blowing head gaskets.

I love the 75 but no way an 1.8 petrol engine. my sister had the head go 4 times on her freelander & recently had to scrap the car as repair was no longer economic

not all 1.8 are the same you know!?

also i suspect there was a reason the head gasket was blowing that was not fixed for it to go 4 times

keep well away if your want a 75 get a diesel one with bmw engine but petrol one no way

Automatic have a lower towing weight too, I have a 1.8 petrol Laguna (not for towing) its towing weight is a max of 700kgs.

Had a Rover 75 diesel. Brilliant car for towing but definitely not the petrol version. Do not buy it.

I had a 2.5 Petrol. A very fast, powerful and responsive vehicle but I would never have towed with it. There are a lot of successful 75 diesel towcars out there, but certainly avoid the petrol. In the case of the 2.5 petrol it was not about reliability as it was a wonderfully reliable lump but more about pure economics. Towing MPG would have been prohibitive. It wasn't very good mpg when solo. The 1.8 was grossly underpowered and unreliable and as stated above, definitely best avoided.

thanks to everyone who answerd my post will stear clear of the 75 and stick with my 2.00 dti vectra for the time being and hope you all have a good season

I have a MG Zt + 2 litr diesel [rover75 type] I find it brilliant for towing our Elddis 462.It returns 30+ mpg towing 50+ without the van the problem I have is that I hope it runs for ever because I dont know what to replace it with, it ticks all the boxes.

unless it has the modified gead gaskei do not touch it i had a diesal for years great car
