Currently we have a ford mondeo as our tow car, whilst not a bad car itself the one we have is cursed. It was a bit of a rush bye due to having been involved in a motor way accident that had written of our car and we knew we would need a new one asap.

We have talked about going the 4x4 route as then we will not struggle to much on towing rates. Also as I am short arsed I like to be higher up when driving. We are looking at honda crv and nissan x trail.

Our car is not used that much, the main use for it is towing the van or traveling to Nottingham and Lincolnshire to visit family. Hubby use's a motorbike for work and me a scooter. It is used a little for pottering around but nothing major. We can put £40 worth of diesel in the car, it is half full and lasts around a month sometimes a bit longer.

However we are also wandering if it is worth going down the 4x4 route or going for an estate, whilst there will be a bit more restriction on the tow weight the running costs will be similar to what we currently have

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

many thanks

Em

If you want a 4x4 and passed your driving test before 1997 then why not treat yourself.

There are downsides though. Not all a bed of roses. Fuel consumption is a big one.

I had a Range Rover and when you think it took a full tank of fuel from the midlands to cornwall it makes you think do you really need one.

I have a diesel mondeo estate and with care it can do 39mpg towing.
Always had thirsty cars before and it made a change not having to keep filling up whilst away.

We changed our tow car at the beginning of the year and went the 4x4 route.

We had a Passat estate and have replaced it with an X Trail, which we love. We don't 'need' a 4x4 but I'd always secretly fancied one. The XT is great, not too big to drive but it has a huge boot. It does not get driven much as I have a company vehicle for work and my wife has her own car, so running costs not a big issue. I get high 30's/low 40's I guess, less when towing. It can be driven in front or 4-wheel drive.

I enjoy the high driving position and space inside, ours is a Teckna so it has lots of toys The kids love it too. Plus it is a great tow car.

If you get an XT, the post 2007 models are slightly bigger and have the more powerful 2.0DCi engine. My friend has a CRV and swears by it, so also a good bet, though boot smaller than ours.

Others to consider are Yeti, Tiguan, Kuga, Rav4, Sportage etc.

Downsides are dearer road tax, tyres and fuel bills - but these are insignificant if the car is little used (apart from the road tax).

Drive a couple of 4x4's and see what you think. We were lucky enough to be able to rent an X Trail on holiday a few years ago.

A lot of people don't see the point of a 4x4 unless you are a farmer. Don't let that put you off - buy one just to annoy them

You rang, have a look at the new superb go for the 2ltr 140 or 170 bhp tdi with DSG, or even the big daddy, the 4x4x version

Consider that a larger 4x4 will cost more to run and the road tax can be more than double that of the mondy,

If you want a 4x4 just to leave lying around most of the year, why not try and find an old landrover 110 diesel, it can be insured under classic car insurance saving shed loads of money,( if over a certain age) and road tax free, and should return 30 plus mpg

Heres an example http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C404801

I think the CRV is a bit of a wimp and would go for the X Trail in preference.

If you want a seriously good towcar see here;

We've looked and tried many cars this weekend. From the Mitsubishi outlander to a subaru. We looked at the nissan Xtrail [too wee inside, felt claustrophobic]and test drove a fair number of them too.

The car that came out top [for us] was the Skoda superb with dsg. It had so many added extras [our son loved the back with it's own air vents in the pillars and cup holders and storage in the centre arm rest for him and his sister]. The boot was perfect for us with our dog too.

Today we contacted the garage...and the car will be ours once they've added the towbar.

What i'd say is go out and try the cars you are looking at, test drive them and look at how the space etc works for you....you may be surprised!

It's the 140 car tdi . It's 11 months old with 6000 on the clock is the Se plus and we got a brilliant deal.

For us , it's the poshest car that we'll have ever had and certainly has more gadgets than you can shake a stick at!!

I learnt to drive in a Skoda Octavia and loved it...

If you put your mobile phone on the lid of the front ashtray and open it by sliding the lid in there is a signal booster under there, ask the dealer to update the satnav maps are 2013 now, also ask them to disable the seatbelt warning chimes or they will drive you mad, while they are doing that ask them also to enable both fog lights, the Uk version only lights up the OS one, but the nearside one also has a bulb, so only needs a tick on there computer box for it to work, this will only take them 2 mins to do while its being serviced for you

30mpg at the most, depending on how old, the 300/200 tdi you might get 30mpg, if your very careful, I manage 29 uphill and down dale, or on a run/towing makes no difference, the older 19J is good for 20-25

cheap and landy don't go together, even older ones fetch a few grand if they're solid.

We have just changed from Jeep Grand Cherokee to a Mondeo Estate and are delighted with it so far. It just been well tested with a 5+ hour tow journey back and forward to Cornwall and ten days running around THOSE country lanes in very high temperatures, it behaved impeccably. The ride was sheer bliss after grinding and groaning around in the Jeep for 10 years. We will not be returning to a 4x4. We did loads of legwork looking at many alternatives including Mercedes,Audi,Kia and BMW, the Mondeo fitted the bill for us, mainly for comfort and space but we are finding it to be an excellent tow vehicle.

Many thanks for your replies to this posting, (any more advise very welcome). We are both keen to ensure that the car that is brought is right and not rushed into...

A very good choice.
Ive yet to find anything negative written about these.
Best car in its class in 2012 I believe.
Ive also heard of folk coming from a BMW 5 series and saying the Superb is a better car.
The 140 hp CR engine is also top knotch.
You wont go wrong with it.
