We are buying a Coachman Caravan with a MTPLM of 1600kg and need to buy another car to tow this. What can anyone recommend. Looking to spend 10-12k on a used car.

We are novice caravanners. Previously had a motorhome but as my OH says we have gone to the 'dark side'!!!!

Tbh you are into 4 x 4 territory and vehicles such as XC90s, Land Cruisers and possibly newer X Trails and CRVs although check their kerbweights.

I agree with snowy747 that you need to be looking at 4x4 vehicles for this kind of weight but this has always been a problem with Coachman caravans because they are robustly constructed compared to other caravans with the extra weight in the MIRO which weighs in heavier to other caravans thus needing a more adaptable towing vehicle. In the Coachman Owners Club many of the 4x4 owners tow with either a Kia Sorrento, Volvo XC90, Toyota Land Cruiser or Land Rover. I'm not saying this is what is best but merely a guide as to what other Coachman owners tow with.

A Mondeo is going to be legal id you have a pre 97 licence with a limit of 1800 kg but not ideal. It will be over 100% of the cars kerb weight for mist Mondeos.

Thanks for all your advice. Has been most useful. We think we are going to go for the Honda CRV. Spoken to someone who tows a similar weight caravan to ours & they say it pulls great. Had a look around and some good prices on nearly new Hondas.

Hi,

I would be looking at a used BMW 5 series estate or Merc E class , these have towing capacities over 1600 kg, but you will have to check the Kerb weight.

Lots of people with talk about the 85% rule , this is not law only a guide, however if you are new to towing I would stick closely too it .

You must not have a caravan with a higher MTPLM than your cars Kerbweight

Take peoples verdict on it tows great with a pinch of salt sometimes.

You read it on here sometimes. Someone says their car tows xxxxkg fine, Then goes on to say they have to change down a lot for the hills and only manage xxmph.

Everyones opinion is different. Of course my cars perfect :).
I call it adequate. 130bhp remapped to 150 towing a caravan at 72%. Its adequate.

What it did enable me to do was tow the caravan with a missing turbo pipe up the hills on the A30 in cornwall without have to be towed up.
I would have made better progress if it wasn't for the scenic or picasso?? that slowed on every hill it came to.

Its a personal thing. My perfect towcar would be a supercharged Range Rover with 400bhp+ towing a 1200kg caravan. Thats an ideal match :)

400 bhp No anything above 200 will do the trick Oh and low 20,s MPG

200bhp is OK in a small hatch but anything bigger needs more :)

I need more :)

But its a balance of not letting the engine explode and decent fuel consumption.

With a steady foot and no speeding i can get high 30's towing.

Might see if i can do away with the roofbox and see if i can crack 40mpg.

Torque is what you need. A sorento will tow a 1
600kg van easily. 168 bhp for 06-10 models,194 2010 models,but311 lbs/ft torque.
