If it is the P38 (1994-2002) it should not be too bad, it will probably be the air suspension pump (common problem) and very easily and cheaply fixed. The pump is not very big and can easily be overworked, especially if there have been leaks on the system.
A reconditioned pump can be got hold of for under £100 and only takes 10-15 mins (at most) to fit. If you have more time you can recondition one yourself for around £30 (max) for the parts (cylinder liner and piston seal).
If it is the L322 models (2002 onwards) then, unfortunately, they are more expensive and a bit more work to change the pump.
ST1100 it's the P38 1998 2.5 diesel , thx 4 your reply its given us some hope , the pump was changed today but now there is no power supply to the air suspension pump, can u shed any light at all ?
If the pump failed the suspension may have "locked out" The dealer should connect to a computer and run an EAS reset. The software and lead are available off ebay quite cheaply
Thank you ST1100 - it has been linked up to computer but not since new pump fitted - we will revisit the garage today - fingers crossed they'll put it on the computer and reset and hey presto - feeling hopeful - ill report back - really appreciate your help - :)
the above link may help. It is fuses 27 and 29 and relay 20 (swap this with one for the heated screen to see if it works).
Don't forget also, the suspension will only change in height when all the doors/bonnet are closed and, if the air tank is empty, could take around 10 mins with the engine/pump running to fill the air tank.
I also have the 1998 P38 2.5 diesel (DSE) but mine is having a slightly bigger problem in that the turbo wastegate is sticking open so loosing power and chucking out black smoke when needing power (uphill and pulling away). If I cannot get if moving freely then will have to look to see if can get hold of parts or second hand replacement (around £80 to £130).
Thanks to both of you - simply blown away by the support from you guys - I will give all this info to my husband - it's so useful to be armed with all this info when dealing with mechanics - tbh there has been a lot of head scratching going on - today another mechanic who knows more will be on duty - cant thank you both enough for all tour help :) fingers crossed will get it sorted either today or Monday and be on our way to Newquay - the dogs been in kennels since Thursday as we were leaving early hours fri morning - ho hum I'm sure were not the first this has happened to !
As much as the guys on here have helped, you should try a dedicated RR/LR forum - I lurked on one for a while and what they don't know about their cars isn't worth knowing
Whenever I've had a car problem, I've had better answers of the forums than from any dealer.
