A cheap tow car to replace our rubbish Vauxhall Vectra!!
We have a Bailey Ranger pretty lightweight at 1304.

Mondeo's are cheap. But as with most modern cars there are some expensive parts.

Dual mass flywheels are common issues on a lot, Injectors may need programming to the cars ECU adding more expense.

Diesel particle filters that dont like short city work. Some need running at higher revs/speed for a length of time.

We had to get another car after our Vectra went. We have a Ford Focus Estate 1.6 Petrol. Lovely car.

Pretty much any 1.9 tdi/dci should do the job with ease. I currently have a laguna estate tdi low miles & history for sale. Tow bar fitted. An excellent tow car.

I agree with Grampian, the dual mass flywheels are a big issue cost wise.   We managed to avoid these with our three Mondeos.   Richard nicked my Mondeo when his job meant a lot of high mileage driving.
We towed with all three Mondeos without problem, inc
Ding a fairly heavy folding camper. It was an ancient pressed steel, hard top, which weights a fair bit.

At least with the Skoda you can fit a single flywheel and clutch system for a quater of the cost of a DMF

You will laugh but we are on our second X Trail and it is not expensive to run at all apart from fuel costs. I paid £2800 a year ago on a 52 plate. Drives like a car, very comfortable.

Plenty of cheap mondeos about that have had recent and warrantied clutch/dmf replacements.

I made a point of buying one that has just had it done and was under warranty for another year.

In regards to other problems they're just as likely on any other manufacturer.

No problems pulling my outfit
