I am looking to get my first caravan soon, however before I purchase one I thought I would double check that my car would safely tow it. If I was a little confused before I checked I certainly am now, and I am hoping that someone on this excellent forum will be able to help.
I checked uktow.com and here are the details
Car : Audi A4 Avant 1.9 TDI
Kerb Weight : 1611 Kg
85% : 1369.35 Kg
Towing Capacity : 1600 Kg
The Provence details are
Mass in Running Order (Kg) - 1206
Maximum Technical Permissible Laden Mass (Kg) - 1420
I then checked towcar.info and depending on the User Payload value I enter for my caravan which I think should be 1420 - 1206 The result is between 87%, however if I put the payload as 150kg then the result obviously changes to 84%.
Could someone please tell me if my car an safely this van, as we have set our heart on it and I really don't want to change to a Ranger it I can help it.
We tow our Provence with a Hyundai Terracan. Are you sure you have the weight correct - we have an S7 Provence and the MTPLM is 1495kg. Did you pass your driving test post 1997? If so the rules re towing are different, you would have to pass the B+E test I think.
We used to pull a series 5 Bordeaux with an A4 Avant, plenty of power for the job and a good stable tow.
We also towed our Pegasus (1480kg) with it at 90% without problem.
Providing that the figures that you posted are accurate the car and caravan match would be just over 88% according to the online calculator (link below). Using this method you can calculate any percentage you like disregards what car or caravan you have and you know the results are accurate.
