Any advice on the 2012 Honda cr-v idtec 2.2 4x4 diesel as a tow car. Is it any good in the snow? I am thinking of changing it from a Mazda 6 2.2 diesel which has never let me down.
I know a Honda rep - he said - "Honda don't do towing vehicles" He said - there are lots of other vehicles that are far better.
However - I imagine it depends on what you are towing - if it's a caravan with any weight - I would look elsewhere - but if your van is only light - just fit snow and ice tyres.
As a tow car supperb. Never towed in the snow. I think you will also find it is not a true 4 x 4. Also check your weights I think the Honda will be on the limit. Honda tow match
Great towcar pretty much the best I have had with a bailey pageant behin. The 4wd is variable depending on conditions. Was also fine in last winters snow

There good in snow and also an able towcar with 100kg nose weight limit and a good kerbweight between 1690-1730 model dependent .
We were snowed in while in Spain Feb this year and the depth of the snow was 10-12inches and my CRV never faltered
The auto has a towing limit of 1500kgs, ( tends to hunt between 4th and 5th when towing) manual 2000kgs, performane in snow depends on the tyres fitted (Dunlop ST30 M+S as standard). Not a true 4x4 but detects wheel slippage and goes into 4 wheel drive automatically. I tow an Amara 520/4 with a2010 iDtec auto , no problems, mpg 22-26 mpg depending on journey /type of road/traffic etc. Mpg solo averages 35, have managed 49mpg solo on a 70 mile run to Lincolnshire but used a VERY light right foot.
Honda towbar from main dealer £735,with twin electrics, ask for a towing kit (same thing but this is specified if ordered from the factory) and it is £685. Prices correct August 2012. This is my second CRV and never had a problem. It will be much better in snow than the Mazda 6 due to availability of 4 wheel drive.
Blimey - I reckon the final drive of my Saab must be quite high - when towing the only time it goes into 6th (it is auto) is if I am on a long downhill stretch and over 65mph (speedo lol) Joking aside, it spends most of the time on the open road in 5th and still returns 27+ mpg. I'm quite happy with that considering that I make very good progress. As soon as I get out of town on goes the cruise and it's uphill and down dale at around 60 per with no slowing or hold-ups. Love it.
I do like the look of the CR V though and cannot understand the salesman doubting that they are any good for towing!!

I have the new CR-V EX iDTEC, and it's a superb tow car. Go for the manual rather than the auto. I changed my Accord Tourer for the CR-V and I'm amazed at how much more economical it is.
Like Robbie I changed from an Accord Tourer to the CR-V and it tows my Burgundy like a dream.
As for 4x4 capabilities, well, it's a soft-roader rather than a true off-roader and it's difficult to tell as on mine it selects itself automatically should the front wheels slip. In the latest version 4 wheel drive is selectable manually.
