Hi All
Went to a caravan showroom today only to find that my car (Citroen Picasso 1.6HDI Exclusive EGS) has some sort of towing limit similar to that of a mini. Not really happy but it looks like my limit is 1080kg which i think is really low seeing as its a 7 seater people carrier with a 1500kg kerb weight so i thought it would be easily be able to do most things.
Cant change the car now for a number of reasons but are there any decent caravans out there that would be in that weight bracket (needs to sleep at least 4 - there are 5 of us but one/two can sleep in an awning).
Failing that, whats the cheapest half decent vehicle i could get to pull something? Thinking about £2k
Plenty of 4 berth caravans well under that figure. If you look at the older stuff.
My sister maybe selling her Super Sprite, 5 berth with the bunk at the rear.
L shape seating at the rear, Double at the front. Double at the rear with the over bunk.
I think its a 1994 or 1995? 1000kg gross laden from memory.
I doubt it very much. People keep wanting more so the additional items added by the manufacturers just keeps adding to the extra weight that's why the majority of newer caravans are heavier than the older ones.
Leevis - I know how you must feel. When we had our Rover 45TDi, we were somewhat cheesed off to find it had a towing limit of 1000kg. We had a Pennine Pathfinder for a season, then as OH wanted an internal shower, we went to an Elddis Whirlwind, also 1000kg. (later once we got the first Saab, we then got a 'van with a separate shower, also for OH...)
The Rover was one of the ones with 110bhp, and could have easily pulled something heavier. But I assume that it was the manufacturer's opinion of what the rear platform members were capable of safely dealing with, and thereby is the answer I am sure with your Picasso.
Good luck with the search for either a caravan light enough or a car for the caravan of your choice.
Pete
That Elddis Xplore one looks ok, only think i dont like is the wet room (prefer a seperate shower) but i think i am going to have to compromise on this one quite considerably, anyone else know any lightweight caravans?
Bit of a minefield this eh!
My vehicles braked manufacturers towing capacity is 1180kgs
Looking at a caravan but not too sure what i should be looking at here
There is an Xplore 504 which has a MIRO (Mass in running order) of 1144kgs but it has a plated MTPLM of 1322kgs and a max MTPLM of 1350kgs
Yay if its the MIRO, Bugger if its the MTPLM

You go by the plated MTPLM 1,322kg, the max is if you want a weight upgrade, then you pay to have a new plate for that weight.
Not sure if i am correct here but my towing capacity is 1180kgs does this mean that i can only get a caravan with a plated MTPLM of this or less?
not too sure how relevent the MIRO is because i thought that if that is lower than my towing capacity and i dont put anything in the caravan it should be ok.
Some peugeot/citroen models are very difficult to work out a proper towing limit for.
Check for your maximum train weight, I had a 406, 1.9HDI at kerbweight, I could tow a caravan of 1300kgs, BUT if the car was loaded, the tow figure was down to just under 1000Kgs
some other manufacturers do this as well, but it seems to be Peugeot/Citroen who are the worst offenders for it.
