We have recently bought our first caravan and as it is a small and light unit (1000kg MTPLM) I have been towing it with our Renault Scenic 1.6 petrol.
The caravan is just about within the towing limit weight for the Scenic and it copes pretty well on the flat, but any sort of incline and it starts to struggle.
So, I am looking for another car which will act as a tow car and also my daily driver for a 30 mile A-road round trip.
I've already settled on a diesel (for the torque and fuel economy) but I'm looking for suggestions of models that people have good experiences with.
I've got a budget of £4,000-5,000 and want a car that is a bit future proof, so ideally capable of up to a 1250kg-ish van, bearing in mind I am limited by the lack of a B+E license, so 4x4's etc are out.
2006 -2007 Mondeo 2 ltr diesel will do the job no problem, just have a look on Autotrader website to get an idea of prices/mileages of many makes of 2 ltr diesels
I went to a C&CC site a few weeks ago, There were enough Mondeo's to start a club.
2000 - 2007 models, With an empty car they can tow 1800kg, 75kg noseweight and with care you can get high 30's when towing.
I managed 39mpg last year. Only managed 33mpg this year (damn roofbox drinks fuel).
Just been on a run and i managed 57mpg with a loaded car but no roofbox or trailer.
The 2007 on models can tow a bit more. And are heavier but they are not as good on the fuel.
Still good though for the size of the car.
If a Mondeo is too big consider the Focus or the Octavia.
