Hello, I am looking for a new car to tow our Abbey expression 470 year 2000. would like a diesel 2 wheel drive. any recommendations? currently have a 1.6 astra!!
When you say new car do you mean brand new or second hand? I wanted the Skoda Octavia estate but due to my budget I would have had to go for one with a higher mileage but was afraid of picking up an ex-taxi that is why I opted for the Volvo V50 with 1,000 miles on the clock. The Octavia has a bigger luggage compartment compared to some of it's rivals but it's a capable towcar and will probably get more miles to the gallon in comparison to a Mondeo or a Vectra although not many people will opt for a Vauxhall towing anyway.
The Volvo V50 have three different size diesel engines which are the 1.6, the 2.0 and the 2.4 (5 cylinder engine). The 1.6 has 109 BHP, The 2.0 has 136 BHP and the 2.4 has 180 BHP which is what Volvo install in thier 4x4 vehicles although all the V50's are front wheel drive. The 1.6 and 2.0 engines are the same as the Ford Focus engines but the 2.4 is actually a Volvo engine that is supposed to more reliable out of the three. The towball weight limit on all three estates is 75 kgs. The kerb weight of the 2.4 is 1568 kgs and the torque is 258 Lbs./ft. and the 2.0 kerb weight is 1456 Kgs. with 236 Lbs./ft torque both with a six speed gearbox (manual). With my caravan the match with a 2.0 would have been 88% but with the 2.4 is 83% so that is the reason why I opted for the 2.4 diesel model. The down side with the V50 is the fact that the rear luggage compartment is smaller in volume to other rivals but if loading is not an issue then it's a good option to consider. Hope this helps.
