hi all, we have a 4 berth abbey aventura 320 and we want to change our car we have at the moment . we have a tucson 2 ltr but it is the only main family car and is too expensive too run just on the streets daily. We seem to be struggling to change to a nice size car not as big but will be ample enough to tow our rather heavy caravan. its a 2006 model so its not new. we need a serviceable strong car but not overly big that would suit all family needs and towing. any reccomendations please help. regards linda.

A momdeo tdci would do the job nicely.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Yes they can. There was on in the mags , Went through an auction with almost 500,000.

It wasn't that old either. Must have been on the go 24/7 with several drivers.

Mondeo or Skoda both have broken spring history according to google but despite this I think both make excellent towcars. Can't see any point in this brand loyalty business and mud slinging personally.

Most 1.9 or 2.0 ltr tdi or tdci will do the job satisfactorily subject to checking the weights. My last 2 tow cars were a Renault Laguna estate 1.9tdci and a Volkswagon passat saloon 1.9 tdi. Both were excellent and economical. Many people will say the laguna suffers electrical problems. Mine didn't.

The point about clocked mileage wasn't entirely made in jest. The broken spring warning is just a red herring as its a relatively cheap fix on any car & the least of the buyer's worries when anything from dmf to turbo could fail expensively. As pointed out, its not the make of car, its the service history of said car is all that matters

So the answer the op seeks is that most 1.9/2.0litre diesel cars should do the job & even if mileage is very high its not a bad thing provided there is a service history of regular servicing & expensive repairs already carried out.

You here all sorts, but it isn't generally true. I ad my lat Mondeo for 7 years and it never skipped a beat. I had no issues at all in that time I just serviced it and replaced tyres at the relevant times. I only replaced it because I decided that I was only saving up o my kids cold spend it later and I decided to have some pleasure instead. The new one so far gives me total confidence, but it is very early days yet. What I can say is that it is superb towcar absolutely stable and with more than enough power and torque.

By repute. On the other hand my son has had to Octavias and both required new clutch and DMF after 25k miles, my brothers Octavia needed a fresh lutch and DMF after 40k miles. I chose a card which is advertised as Fix Or Repair Daily in a blue oval and never had a problem to even talk about in 7 years.

The DMF will go on all cars, quite frankly I dont know why they fit them, mine was away when I first looked at the car, I told the garage and they fitted the single system never had any more problems, when the clutch went at 225,000 just had to replace the clutch plate and release bearing, £150 fitted

I quite agree, you here a lot of horror stories about them however, put into perspective when my brother and on were having problems with their clutches I enquired about th ost of replacing mine ith a fixed one and was quoted £600. Now it is a fair whack but in terms of the ot of repairs to a car it is not particularly outrageous.

I'd choose the mondeo not out of loyalty but because its a lot heavier 1352kgs must be close to the octavia's kerbweight.

Just had my turbo on the golf 2.0 tdi done £680 for a brand new one fitted, if the blades weren't damaged it would of been £180 to strip and clean the VNT
