Hi all i am new to caravanning and we have been once (waiting for the wife to get home then we off again). anyway i am looking a purchasing my own van in the near future and need to know if i can tow with my car i have an 07 mazda 6 estate which i love and am planing on buying a bailey pageant provence (either series 5 or 6). is this sufficient? i know the car says i can tow braked 1600
Kg which the provence is way under however ive heard about the kerb weight being 85% of the vehicles weight now is that the cars wight or if we include myself and wife in the car as well? from what i can work out if i loaded the van up to full whack MTPLM 1420 Kg and the weight of the car i think i have a 93% tow weight of the car. i need help please as we have set our heart on the provence and it is the right layout for our growing family.

any assistance given would be great. thanks

The 85% is the cars unladen weight.

The thing to watch is the gross train weight. With mine i can tow 1800kg. But i cannot load the car to its max and tow 1800kg.
The gross weight is 200 - 300 kg less than the combined figures.

Depending on the actual model of mazda 6 you maybe very close to 100% of the cars kerbweight.

Check your V5C for the cars actual kerbweight, The gross train weight will be on the cars chassis plate.
On the door post or under the bonnet.

The towing figure of 1600 kgs. is what the vehicle's towing capability is after the manufacturer have done their tests regarding the design structure of the chassis etc. and not a safety match for real towing by any means. You should always apply your calculations regarding the vehicles actual kerb weight as this weight is a matter of fact and not a calculation produced out of thin air as some dealer like to think otherwise. Once you have found your vehicle's kerb weight you can check what the percentage match is with the caravan by using an online calculator such as the one in the link. With reference to fitting a stabiliser, this application will not by any means correct a poorly matched outfit or rectify an unstable loaded caravan as a stabiliser is only a secondary safety device as an extra security measure for example in high winds or high sided passing vehicles such as lorries and coaches etc. so it is important to try to adhere to the 85% match especially if you are a novice.

A dealer will sell you anything thats legal.

Whether its safe is a different matter.

The weight of the car is 1520kg and the van unladen is 1205kg. Now my 85% weight of my car is 1292kg. Is that right? So as long as i dont load the van more than 87kg i will be on my 85% limit. So what id do is put the heavy stuff in the car. Would you agree with that.

thanks for all yr comments they are all helpful

The van maybe 87kg heavier than its unladen weight to start with.

It would be unrealistic to think you can tow it at the recommended 85%. Your going to exceed that quite easily.

Add a battery, Spare wheel, Gas bottle and hookup lead. Thats probably taken care of the 87kg.

Before you start adding fluids for the toilet, Awning, plates and cutlery etc.

You probably will exceed the 85% how much over is unknown until you weigh everything.

Dont trust the unladen weight either.
