Just thought I would give a reminder about the "turbulence" created when following a Car Transporter.Driving down the A1a couple of weeks ago I tried ,unsucessfully to pass a Car transporter ...twice.It created quit a wobble on my van. on a clear stretch , he moved partially on to the hard shoulder and I passed overlapping lane 3.
Then in France ,I had to follow one for 15 mins before I had 2 lanes between us to overtake.They do have quite an effect on stability if you get too close.

MMmmm. I know from experience that some tankers can set up a sway, but the one time it happened to me was en route home to Oxford from Southampton after collecting a folding camper. I was passing the tanker on a stretch of the M27 and as I drew level and about halfway along, a nasty snake started to develop. I hung back and had another go a mile or so later, having dropped the speed down to 50 and got y OK. The unit was bought with everything - the seller even left a small vac. The way it was loaded was, in my opinion, the reason for the swaying.
I have passed all types of HGV and apart from that one time, I have never ever suffered from any instability. I would be looking to check carefully tyre pressures, loading, noseweight etc.
I ensure that if I am blocked by passing traffic, I do not get too close to HGVs, especially the double-decker variety, due to the nasty bow wave they chuck out.
Good luck in checking for possible contributing factors.

When I towed I was always very cautious about passing car transporters although I found the worst turbulence was when you were immediately behind them rather than along side. The trouble is to avoid the turbulence you only have two choices, hang a long way back or overtake. When overtaking I always prefered to do so on an uphill section.

They are definitely the worst vehicle to overtake.

It must cost the owners a fortune in lost fuel because the drag must be horrendous to generate all that turbulence - you'd think they'd put some sort of cover over the load to try calm it down?

I didn't know that but come to think of it now, only a couple of weeks ago travelling north on the M1 with caravan in tow we were travelling behind a car transporter and felt this kind of buffeting sensation. My wife asked what was wrong and I said I think it's turbulance from that lorry in front. She told me to hold back so I slowed to about 50 mph. thus the buffeting ceased. I found this thread to be quite a useful piece of information actually. Thanks.

Racking my brains and i dont remember having any issues overtaking them. But them again the times i travel there are probably none on the road.

I have lernt over time that whether overtaking or being overtaken accelerating makes the outfit more stable.

If i see a large vehicle coming up to overtake i slow down, Then as they start to pass i accelerate gently but not so much that you cause them issues when overtaking.

Dont have any issues then.

The best way is to increase speed to about 85 then its not there for too long!

Seriously though,your quite right they're a bugger.

Never had a problem with them or other HGVs. Been up and down the A1 plenty of times with the van on the back and overtaken/followed transporters full of Nissans.
