You know when you change your car ,and you think you have haggled a great deal,Afterwards you think ,who is happier.. Me or the salesman?Could I have got more?
Time has come to change my car,will sell mine privately so no PX.
If the dealer asking price is £16500, where should I aim my first offer,and what should I be prepared to pay to get a good deal...cash!

It all depends what car you go for, leaving it to nearer the end of a quiet month might get you a bit more off, like November through to Jan, then there is the VAT free deals that skoda do that saves you 20% on brand new

Do you really want to try and sell your privately in this climate

If a salesman won't budge just say you may think about it, casually mentioning your going to look at the same car elsewhere first, and dont be afraid to get up and walk, they want to sell.

Thats how I got a 36,000 mile 59 plate Skoda superb for £7000, book price was £12,000, and got £1500 trade in on my Octavia with 237,000 miles on it.

SWMBO is picking up a 10 plate superb later today its only got 7000 miles on it for £10400, book is £14,000.

Check out auto trader for the car you're looking for to see what prices they are selling for and the mileages, this will give you a ballpark figure of what to expect to pay then haggle them down, even include mats and a full tank of fuel, make sure it has a spare wheel and tools, decent tyre tread, a min 6 month road tax, and dont forget you can take your own road tax and cash in the remainder, if you trade in

The lowest price any car at a dealership can be sold for is decided beforehand, its not up to the salesman. Dealers would rather push slow sellers back through auctions for a low price rather than drop the retail price too low as that damages the retail market.

Your job is to try to get him down to that bottom line. Beat the salesman down as low as he will go then say, "well I was actually hoping to pay £500 less than that" & get up to walk out. If he lets you go then you know you have reached his bottom line.

offer 20% off and dig in for a long haggle. Take sandwiches & coffee. You won't get 20% but keep at it until you get as much as you think you can then ask for extras to be thrown in.

Book price is pretty irrelevant. If the dealer put it up at £16500 it means nothing that "book" may be say £20k. You are only concerning with chipping money off the asking price.

Car prices are quite buoyant at the moment so it may not be easy. Be prepared to walk away. You can always go back.

The car I am selling is a Kia Sportage XS CRDI 4wd on a 58 plate.
One owner 50k miles,full Kia service ,4 newish tyres.Will be serviced and MoT next week.2yrs Kia Warranty remaining,taxed to end March.I want to sell it whilst I can still get something for it £8k at least.
I am thinking of a Chevrolet Captiva ,the top model ,up to 2yrs old.
I think they are not very popular so reasonably priced.
Offered £6600 PX ,dealer said I could get £8k ish private
If I don't get at least £8k I will keep it for 6 months.

You are on the right tracks by not trading in your car.
and as jack and jon have said if the salesman lets you walk away he has reached his bottom price.
he has almost reached his bottom price when he says ill just have a word with the boss

Your van has a MTPLM of 1450kg. 

Any family sized car will tow that, even a 2ltr tdi Skoda octavia

I have heard quite a few bad reports on the captiva and the Antara (it's vauxhall cousin)
You may want to check that out before you part with your old car and cash.

Always be prepared to haggle a bit, but it depends how much you really want that particular car or are willing to shop around

Think twice about the Captiva, the dealer price maybe 16500 and you may get it for say 15000 but what will it be worth in a years time probably 9000-10000 if your lucky as already said a Yankee gas guzzler and not very well made either. Sorry

Try doing 10secs googling before you post Bob, then your posts might make more sense. A Captiva is much the same size as an Octavia not an Escalade.

The 'Chevys' sold in the UK are Daewoos. Cheap, with a 5yr guarantee & only worth considering if you want to get a good few yrs out of it. Anybody intending to trade in after 2-3yrs should look elsewhere.
