Hi just wanting some opinions please. I am looking for a towing car and have seen 2 Mondeos. One is an 06 mondeo zetec tdci 2.2 with tow bar and has done 87000 miles it has alloy wheels and other little extras. The other is a 56 mondeo LX 2.2 tdci with no towbar, steel wheels with 67000 miles on the clock. The zetec looks nicer and already has towbar fitted but has higher mileage. Both cost £3995. Which one would you go for? Any opinions would be great!
Thank you!
My husband always says dont buy with a tow bar because you don't know if it has been over used .
But in the past we have.
These are great cars and tow well. I have a 59 2.2 tdci and love it . My last car was an estate 2ltr ghia equally good.
I would say the 2.2 tows better.
If they are in good order I think they are fine . Can you have a pre check to make sure the clutch is not going .
I'm no mechanic I just trust these cars.
What are you towing have you checked the wieght .?
I'm sure you will get other replies on here.
Good luck
Never had a Mondeo but if I had your two choices i'd go for the one with the towbar plus it looks better and has other extras. towbars cost about £500 to fit. P.S. i'd check the towbar electrics are working
Thanks guys yes good point that a towbar will cost extra to have fitted. Just my main concern is the mileage being 20,000 difference. But struggling to find a low mileage mondeo in my price range. I have checked weights and mondeo is approx 1525 kg kerb weight and caravan we are looking at buying is i think 1050 kg miro.
I would take the one with less miles. The Zetec spec adds one or two bits but nothing earth shattering, it has climate control as opposed to air con, it has electric rear windows, it has body coloured door handles, alloy wheels and fog lights. I drove a 55 plate LX for 7 years and found it more than adequate, I never missed the small extras and none of them add anything to the performance of the car or to the safety of the car all of them are what could be termed as toys.
Great car especially with the 2.2 engine.
I have just read your message again, I towed a 1450kg hymer with my 2.0 115 tdci lx and as a towcar it was faultless. It returned an easy 33 to 35mpg towing. The car you are looking at will laugh at a 1037kg caravan, towing with it will be so easy. Just be careful with speed, my 115 would let the speed creep up to speeds well over the limit without seeming at all stressed do goodness knows what the 153 bhp car will do.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
the ones quoted are barely run in . our last 2.0 ghia mk3 had 137k on it when we sold it , no issues and the mk4 we have now has 121k on a 57 plate.
wouldnt worry about the miles, no cambelt either on the mk3.they are chain drive so should be good for at least 200k !!! might be worth checking for any sign of clutch / dmf being replaced , that could sway it if 1 or other of cars has had this work done as it is a weak spot on the mondeo ( and many other modern diesels) . can start to fail anywhere from 60k to 140k
hi thanks for the replies guys. I actualy made a mistake in the engine sizes ;-/ the cars i'm looking at are 2.0 not 2.2, silly me! but still i think suitable for the job. i am going to look at the zetec with the higher mileage today and have a test drive, is there any way to tell if the clutch is ok? i am not a car expert but know more than my husband! so he's no good lol. and also how do you tell what mk it is??? never seen this on the car descriptions. Thanks for the help it has definately put my mind at ease about the mileage on mondeos :-)
hi I think they are bit dear for the it dosnt say were you are but am in co durham and there a canny few with better spec 2l tdci titanium 06 06 130bhp with 74k 3995 or 07 07 2l tdci edge with 85k for 3490 with tow bar diesel centre in eston middlesbourgh I do not work for any of these garages
i am in lincolnshire and yes i agree i have seen cheaper cars in other parts of the country of the same spec, but would rather not have to travel too far. Thanks :-)
As they didnt sell an LX with the 2.2 engine run away from that one.
The 2.2 is only fitted to the higher spec models.
Mileage is nothing. Mines just crossing the 170,000 mile mark also.
Has the clutch and dual mass flywheel been done? If not budget for £600 - £800 for a new one. Over £1000 from a dealer.
Buy on condition alone, The lower mileage car may have done lots of short journeys and have more wear and tear on the clutch and an engine thats always working hard when cold.
I have a 2004 estate and paid £2300 for it in 2009.
Check the service history, If its always 1 mile short of the max milegeage between services them find another one.
The service interval is a MAXIMUM not a target. Its ideal for fleets and business users who want to spend as little on servicing as possible.
BUT they dont care if it only last 3 - 5 years then ready for the scrappers.

When I bought mine in 2006 I checked what was available new as opposed to the 1 year old that I eventually bought and the 2.2 tdci engine was an option on all the range including the LX. Though I doubt that there are many LX's that have it fitted.

Having a love affair with our Mondeo - just purchased this year. What a great towcar, we have a 2.2 estate, swallows up everything our Jeep used to and runs along as though there is nothing hooked on the back. Good luck, must agree with the 'sort your own tow bar'advice
