First, apologies again everyone for asking for your advice. We still haven't made our minds up about which car to replace our Nissan Serena with.

Anyway, we've looked at Kia Sedonas and Kia Sportage as I do like being higher up:) But, I've now seen a 2.0 Ford Mondeo Zetec Titanium 2009 plate which I've just absolutely fallen head over heels in love with. (even though it's not high!)

I'm just wondering what others think and mainly if it will tow our caravan safely. Our caravans MPTLM is 1275kg. When I check on 'What Tow Car.com' it throws up allsorts of different types of Mondeos and I can't seem to find this one in the list - maybe it's just a 'woman' thing

Can anyone help please...before I go and spend my money?

(Incidentally, it's absolutely immaculate, has 80,000 miles on the clock - should I be worried about this? and dealer is asking for £6,000 - would you say this is reasonable?)

Thanks ever so much once again and sorry to be such a pain in the backside with my indecisions

a 2.0 ltr Mondeo diesel will very easily pull your caravan, the model you describe is either a Zetec or Titanium, they are just different trim levels (Titanium is the higher spec). For a good idea on prices have a look on

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/used-cars

Just put in postcode. car make and model etc and you will get an idea of prices for the 2009 mondeo 2.0 TDCi. £6000 sounds a good price fr a 2009, Titanium model will be slightly more expensive than Zetec due to higher trim level

Hi ROG.

Thanks for your help...nearest one to it I can find in the list is the 2.0 TDCi 163 Titanium Hatchback 5dr.

On the list it states that the car's gross vehicle weight is 2180kg but on the actual car I've seen the gross weight is 2170kg. On this list for this car it says that the maximum towing weight (braked) is 2000kg. Does thaat mean that my caravan is an ok match with this car?

Thanks again.

amara 520...thanks so much for this...I'll have a quick look now. Finally feels I'm getting somewhere at last! Feeling a bit more confident too:) I just don't want to spend my money I've scrimped and scraped for only to find the car we buy won't pull the caravan.

Thanks to everyone for putting up with my continual questions. xx

Sorry, I'm going to say other things you may not like....

80,000 miles. From around them miles, you may start to have problems with the dual mass flywheel (manuals), the injectors, the fuel pump or the crank end pulleys.

It's not a case of IF, but sadly when they go, (they will all go eventually), they are ALL mega expensive fixes.

If you're going to keep the car a long while, get the conversion done on the clutch back to a solid flywheel, there was no need for ford to stick a chuck of rubber in the flywheel, that's what clutch springs are for.

amara...I've just put in the details and the actual car came up!!! Haha!

It looks a beauty

And - you're right! It iss juust a Titanium

Looking at the others, it seems it's not a bad price actually - loads of others on there for around a thousand less but lots - and I mean seriously, lots - more mileage.

So, I think we're going to go ahead...

I'll put some photos on of the complete outfit when everything's sorted.

Thanks once again

The 163 will tow 1275kg easily..

On a run try out using 5th gear and 6th gear.

You may find at 60mph when towing that 5th gear is more economical.
I managed 39mpg in 5th gear towing my van with an older Mondeo.

Mid 30's will be more average though.

You might say that, but in fact it will be fabulous. I have a mondeo titanium 140 tdci and it pulls my 1450 kg hymer superbly. My kerbweight from the v5 is 1625kg.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

ROG, Can i ask when the HGV expires at age 45. How long do you get to renew before you lose it?

After the expiry date that is. If i dont get the medical for a couple of months will i lose it?

I have an old paper licence and have not used my HGV for a while now. Just as the digital cards came into play.

So i never had a digital card etc.

DVLA usually send a reminder a few weeks before the medical is due

If you do not want to renew then at any point in the future - even in 25 years time - you can pass the D4 medical and get it back

If you got the LGV (was HGV) before 1983 then it could be difficult to get it back because DVLA records are not computerised before that time

If you do renew then you will need to have a photocard so that will be an extra cost

You only need things like digicards and driver cpc if you intend to drive commercially - private is exempt BUT if privately driving a LGV over 7.5 tonnes and a digi is fitted then you MUST use a digicard

To summarise -
Not having a current medical for LGV or PCV means those categories that are covered by the medical become suspended until a new D4 medical is passed - no time limit

I find that interesting, i am still getting used to my new Momndeo. The mk 3 i found very very economical at 55mph in 5th which was my top. However with 6 gears snd more power I found that towing in 5th gear used more fuel

ROG thanks..

I passed my test last 90's 1997 maybe?

I was 45 recently, But not driven an LGV for a few years. I was debating whether to renew and yes they sent the medical forms.

But i had an operation earlier this year and was on a low dose of morphine tablets.
I wasnt sure if that would go against me in a medical.

Now off those tablets and just on some milder nerve blockers that do not affect my driving etc.
Although the doctor said i was OK with the morphine ones as long as i had no side effects. Which i didnt.

I thought there was a 12 month limit on renewing a licence?

Janus. I can only say what works with my car. its a 130bhp 6 speed model. Below 60mph 5th gear is more economical. I have used an OBD reader to double and treble check the fuel flow and trottle position.

60 is borderline for 6th gear in my car. It will pull no problem but just uses more fuel to do it.

I was doing mostly 56mph when i managed 39mpg in 5th gear. At 60mph its usually 34/35mpg.

If i use 6th gear at 60mph i only get 31mpg. These are towing figures.

I tested it quite a bit on a 40mph road where i could repeat the test several times.

40mph in 4th gear used 9% throttle usage, Change upto 5th gear and the throttle went upto 18% with an increase in fuel flow to match.

Sounds mad but i tested it several times in each gear and it always got the same results. 40mph in 5th actually used more fuel.

Obviously if your car is more powerful then that figure will change. You may have to drop below 38 or even 35mph to get the same results.

wrong info ...2009 mondeos do not have injector or fuel pump issues, never have had , thats the mk3 2001 -2006 tdci that had that problem.
dmf can fail on any modern diesel , not just mondeo . 121000 on our 57 plate and its all good so far
fine towcar , decent on fuel good trim levels.
