I also informed my insurance as well which is actually listed on my policy as a modification but there was no extra charge. Basically, if another car hits you in the rear end (which the towball can do more damage to the third party's vehicle) and also does some damage to your car in the process, if the modification hasn't been reported then the third party could refuse to pay out which leaves you then to claim off your own car insurance but there again your own insurance could refuse to pay out on the same grounds. It's only a phone call away and can save a lot of hassle in the long term but make sure you log the date down when you informed them just in case the message doesn't get passed on and installed on their data base regarding your policy number. Furthermore, you could ask them to confirm the details in writing which they should do.
