I have just bought my first caravan a 2004 abbey acclaim and it has an alko anti snake hitch, my car has a normal fixed tow bar which is new do I need a special type if towball for the hitch?

If it's a standard tow ball you will need an Alko tow ball. If it's a swan neck then no you don't.  If you do have to buy one they normally come painted black you will have to remove the paint from the ball

Basically the Alko towball provides more clearance from the bolt on flange and directly underneath the ball as well in comparison to a standard towball so if the car has a standard towball it will need to be interchaged with an Alko one. If you look at the link you can identify the difference between the two towballs regarding the clearance underneath.

You don't have to order one from Alko, you can usually pick them up from any towbar dealer which will probably be cheaper anyway. Look at the link, it's the fifth one down.

you will need to torque the nuts and bolts to 210 newton metres which is tight you will need a good ring spanner to hold them   malc

When I had to change mine I went up to my local garage who changed it free of charge with a windy gun.

Thanks for the replies I managed to pick one up someone local to me was selling a new one which he hadn't used.
I have an impact gun so will use that to change it.
Thanks for the advice.
I will now call it a stabiliser instead.
