We hiring a tow car to move our van. Our Sterling Eccles has an alko stabiliser. The cars we have looked at all have the normal standard tow balls attached and firms appear to be comfused when I ask for an alko tow ball.

The question is can we tow with this normal ball?? we stuck if not :-(

If a caravan has an Alko stabiliser fitted then you need an alko towball on the towing vehicle for it to be compatible. If you attach an Alko stabiliser to a standard towball it is likely to detach and come off as there isn't enough clearance underneath for the ball to seat properly. Also the Alko towball has a longer neck in comparison to a standard towball from the bolt on flange also the allowance for clearance. If you look at the pictures in the link below you can identify the difference between the two towballs.

As an aside you can also use the detachable swan neck type with an Alko stabiliser. You should be able to buy an Alko tow ball and just bolt it on yourself. You shouldn't have to pay more than £15 for one.

When I bought my caravan I only had a normal tow ball, towed 100 odd miles home no problem. Got an alko now though.

I suppose you could always unbolt standard flange ball & fit an Alko compatable ball, they are only about £15 & you will need suitable size spanners, bolts will be tight so 2ft breaker bar & socket would be good.

I speak from experience do not use a normal tow ball with an alko hitch, we did when we first started out years ago as novices an the caravan detached from the ball and was written off!!!

What a mess...no-one who hires out cars for towing have al-ko tow balls, even though they advertise as specialists in caravan towing :-(
We were messed around all day yesterday with a promise of changing the ball, we offered to buy it so they could change it even said they could then keep it after. They kept telling us they would call back but didn't. We left today with no car to collect the van. We didn't really want to put a towbar on our car, as we site our van now on seasonals.....what a pain !

What type of car are you hiring? Who from?
