We are thinking of buying a Mondeo. The model we have seen is a 2.0ltr 2006 TDCi 130bhp 5 door. Mileage is 91,000. Is there anything we should be mindful of e.g timing chain/belt, should we worry about high mileage. Our caravan(we have not used it yet as only possess a 1.6 Renault Dymanique at mo)will have a MPTLM of 1230 and we believe this will be a good match.
Thanks
That should be an excellent match. I have a 55 reg 115hp which I boought at just under 100K.
I had a rear wheel bearing go which cost £300. My A/C compressor was replaced then the radiator cooling fan at £1200. Had a turbo hose go which caused lots of smoke etc under load but fairly cheap to replace. It's on 127K now and going very well so hopefully it will go on without major problems.
As with all diesels they have a dual mass flywheel which can go and cost several hundred but mine is thr 5 speed tiptronic auto so shouldn't happen to mine.

£300 for a wheel bearing ??
i know its a full hub job but that is very steep.think i paid around £40 for the part when i had a mk3 and its an hours job max to fit.
as said , dmfs do fail as they do on all modern manual diesels , chain driven cam should cause no issues , injectors were a weak spot but pretty much sorted by 2006 , subframe bushes can cause issues too , listen for clunking from rear end on poor roads and budget a couple of hundred £ to replace. sticky rear brake calipers and handbrake cables are a known issue as well
£600 - £800 average for a complete clutch change with a DMF. Not much you can do to avoid those unless buying an auto and a LOT of moderns diesels use them.
91,000 is barely run it. But whats the service history like?
I am always wary of lower mileage diesels. Have the owners bought them for the cost of fuel alone and not serviced them often enough?
With servicing more often than the maximum limits in the book. Mine has reached 170,000 miles.
I bought a 2004 diesel estate with the 2ltr 130 bhp engine a couple of months ago, only issue so far is the budgie chirping under the bonnet when ticking over at start up
Apparently it's the crankshaft pulley which I've heard is a pain to change.
I have a 54 plate estate diesel. Only thing I don't like is the clutch, cost me about £800 to have a new assembly, and they complain a bit pulling away on hills (with the van) But, other than that its very good, does 50mph solo and 37 pulling van and its fully loaded most of time including full size buggy for erindoors.
I bought a mondeo that had just had the clutch and dmf done. Wasn't really anymore without and documented clutch replacement and was great peace of mind.
Many TDCI have a noisey pulley/drive belt tensioner. I know mine does and I don't want to fancy spending £160 on the pulley/belt/tensioner so I just turn up the radio!
I had the 6 speed 130BHP estate, a noisy belt tensioner was the only problem which was solved by turning the radio up, pulling a caravan I stuggled to use 6th gear but it did pull well, even up the steep hill on the bottom of the M5
They are great cars I only swapped mine for an S-max which is just a mondeo on steroids
As for the clutch, if they do go you will be looking at about £800.00 they they tend to drop off about 90,000-95,000 so always check if the clutch as been changed, also running them in too high a gear will not do the fly wheel any good and cost you a new clutch
If the reg is AK56HXH it will need a new clutch as that was my old car
------------- Never argue with an Idiot, they drag you down to their level and beat you with experience!!!!
All the Mondeos we have seen have between 90k and 120k mileage on them, this is a concern of mine. Also the sellers advertise them as being immaculate when they are clearly not upon inspection. Will just have to keep looking I suppose.
But as i said in the other thread, You need to buy it from someone that needed a reliable car and serviced it often and properly. Not just an oil change every few years.
Mine now has 170,000 miles on it. Towed out caravan back from Cornwall no issues in August.
Mine had 106K on it when purchased and had the clutch/dmf done (documented and warrantied) at 102K so nice peace of mind there.
Mr clutch however didn't replace the starter however when they done the clutch/dmf so I had to strip and rebuild it shortly after purchase as the dmf particles had seized it up.
