Hi, I tow a Lunar Lexon with my freelander auto TD4 51 Plate. Tows very well and never feels to be struggling. After two and a half hours towing it is very reluctant to change back into top gear after a hill, the engine justs revs at 3ooo revs and refuses to change up. If I stop and have a break of about 45 minutes the problem goes and the box works perfect, it never happens when solo only when towing. I think the auto box fluid is overheating and after reading the write ups about the lucas transmission fix I think this might fix the problem. But before adding it to the gearbox I would like to know if anybody else has used it and if it cured the problem. The fluid was changed on a recent service so the fluid is right. Thanks for any replies or suggestions.

The usual problem with the Jatco box on the Freelander is that the auto fluid isn't changed at the correct times. If yours was changed recently I would be checking with the garage first, as I don't know what the "Lucas" fix is.
I preume the garage did use the correct fluid when they changed it, as there have been reports elsewhere of that not being done.
Hi, The garage that did the work was a proper one and correct fluid was used, the garage, Independent Landrover Services at Preston only work on landrovers. Regards DAF 3600

Lucas (not Lucas electrical) do a range of transmission and engine oil additives.
Never used them myself and very unlikely to.
I believe the 51 plate TD4 has an oil cooler fitted as standard, and there are a couple of things mentioned in RAVE that point to one of the solenoid timing valves causing failure to change up into 4th gear.
Thanks for the reply Peter. The gearbox works perfectly solo, on a round trip of 320 miles gearbox performed spot on, town work, motorway and rural. When I first set off with the caravan no problems, rural from storage, through Preston to M6 then after about two hours on M6 aka Brum it starts to play up. Stopped at Truckers Rest Cannoch for a good brekkie and gearbox perfect again. I think the fluid is overheating in the box under workload as no problems solo. Lucas claims that transmission fix prevents fluid boil/overheating. The thing that worries me is that I can find nobody who has used this stuff and if it does work, I've got till spring to sort something out. Regards Phil.

Consider a transmission oil cooler? Should be available from 4x4 specialits.
