I tow a 1500kg caravan with a 2011 140bhp mondeo with no problems at all, its a cracking car with no faulta at all, I get around 32 mpg on a long run with the van & car fully laden.

i believe the 140 bhp is better suited to towing than the 164 model.

I tow a 1450kg Hymer with a 12 plate mondeo 140 tdci a nd it is superb, but so was the 55 plate 115 that I used for 7 years. I have only towed once so far from Rochdale through mid wales to Fishguard and then home again via Telford, that time it returned 30mpg on what is quite a hard drive towing with lots of ups and downs and winding roads. On the motorway for the first 60 miles it said that the consumption was 33mpg but that is only a computer figure.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

I have a '10' plate Mondeo 2L estate and it pulls like a dream. Biggest problem is keeping the speed down to 60 on motorways, that's where cruise control is so good. Must admit never bother with seeing what mpg it does, if I need to go somewhere I just go, and if car needs diesel I fill it up.

57 plate 2litre tdci 140 here . 30 mpg towing and usually 50 mpg solo , but for whatever reason struggling around 45 mpg for last couple of months, probably cos its taking longer to warm up this time of year.
no issues in 3 years other than an electrical connector got broken under passenger side dash that prevented ignition / starting.

Sorry to hijack your thread but we have a 2008 2.0 tdci titanium x 140bhp hatchback, we are looking to upgrade our old Avondale Pearle for something larger and more modern (which of course involves more weight) can anyone advise the maximum towing weight for the vehicle please as we have been looking for ages now and keep finding conflicting information on the internet. Have seen a nice Baley Ranger twin axle which has a max weight of 1550kgs, any good or too much? The Avondale has a max weight of 1150kgs and unless you hit a bump you really don't know it's behind you.

Funny this as I want to change the car to the exact same car but a estate we have a Swift Challenger but it's quite heavy at 1595 kgs can't seem to get an accurate kerb weight for it. colin

My 2012 hatchback has a massin service of 1625 kg and a max towing weight of 2000kg. It would cope quite happily with the 1550kg van you are looking at. My 1450kg van behind is like you have at the moment, totally stable, and the only time you really notice it is if as you say you hit a pothole.

I tow a 1555kg Swift Challenger with my 2010 Mondeo powershift. It tows it with absolute ease and feels as solid as a rock!!
