If you want to go by the 85% advice then you need a vehicle with a kerbweight of 1350 and towing capacity of at least 1150

Most Focus sized cars or bigger will be fine with that weight.

Something with a 2L diesel will make towing effortless.

A thought ....

If the towing vehicle has a max GVW of 2350 then it can legally tow that 1150 caravan on a B only licence

I did wonder about that when my sister wanted a caravan.

Restricted to 3500kg.

So your figures above would be legal, BUT what if the car had a gross weight of 2400kg with the same caravan?

Would a gross train weight of 3550kg be legal as long as it weighed under 3500kg on the weighbridge?

That would be illegal by 50 kgs

To put the current law simply ...

To tow a trailer over 750 kgs plated MAM on any B licence the one extra rule is ....

The vehicle GVW added to the trailer plated MAM must not total more than 3500 kgs

Compared to the old B licence towing laws where the kerb weight of the vehicle came into play then the new law is much simpler

For licence purposes GVW, MAM and MTPLM all have the same meaning - the legal max something can be when fully loaded

If the answer I gave had not been correct then others would have said so - that is the great thing about an open forum

The extra bit about B only - no B+E - licence towing was so that those with only a B licence could see what was possible

I have a Mondeo Estate with a GTW of 3720kg. Does that mean my sister cannot tow with it?

Actual kerbweight of 1564kg and a gross of 2150kg.

I know her old Mondeo hatch had a gross of 3495. So had no issues.

That was the only figure i was unsure of.

Plated GTW and kerb weight have no bearing on licences

The 2150 GVW is the one for licencing which means that on a B only licence the max plated MAM for the trailer will be 1350 kgs

The GTW GVW and kerb weight licence rules apply across the board so a LGV with a GVW of 7500, a GTW of 12000 and an unladen weight of 5000 is a LGV C1 for licence rules

YOUR SIGNATURE IS INCORRECT - well, part of it
===============================
Post 1997 licence holder?

Max tow weight = Cars gross laden weight + Caravans gross laden weight.

These 2 figures must not exceed 3500kg. And the Caravans gross laden weight must not exceed the cars UNLADEN weight.

Unless the manufacturer has set a lower limit.
=========================================

The bit that says - the Caravans gross laden weight must not exceed the cars UNLADEN weight. - was fully revoked for all B licence holders on 19/01/2013

Apologies to the OP for this drifting away from the original question but that was fully answered before the thread went a little awry
