Hi We went off the other day and indicators wouldnt work on caravan if i put headlights on. it made the front lights flash on caravan instead! luckily we are towing in daylight but any pointers appreciated before I start loking at the wiring. Its all been ok before but wondered if water got in somewhere?

Simplest things first, give the plug and connector a spray with a water repellent spray. Next check inside both the plug and socket for corrosion, especially the earth.

cheers for the replies. will need to keep some wd40 in the caravan. Hopefully its something simple to fix. I must have been lucky as never had any trouble before with towbar or towing electrics. will have a look in daylight.

Can you borrow a trailer board and check if the same thing occurs?, if not then the bad earth is likely to be in the socket and not the plug

Got home ok in daylight and tried the caravan on our car and its ok. Unfortunately its the truck wiring it would seem. Socket connections all look like new. Gonna have to look at the socket wiring at the weekend

It's still probably a bad earth try running another earth from a fresh bit of metal

I had it on my car I tried three different trailers and it did different things on each but once I replaced the earth it behaved as it should on all three.

Thanks for the info. Think I will need some new screws before I take the socket apart they look well corroded. The inside where the pins are is like new. Looks like its pin 3 for the earth and should be white cable.....

There is another possible explanation I have come across (a colleague at work had the issue, but recall reading a similar thread on here before); that is that the power requirements for all the lights on the van overload the circuits on the car resulting in all sorts of funny effects. Colleagues car was fixed be an uprated relay somewhere, afraid I don't know the specifics.

a good dolop of vaseline improves connection and stops corrosion
