I think you will find a local towbar fitter can fit a towbar & dedicated towbar wiring & then a visit to main dealer is required for configuring which obviously has to be paid for. Car warranty cannot be voided just by non dealer fit of towbar but obviously any electrical probs caused as a result will not be covered by car warranty.
Provided dedicated plug in wiring is used its not a difficult job, but some fitters might be unwilling to take on job due to possibility of elecrical problems that they would then be responsible for, so wiping out their profit on the job.
VAG have an annoying habit of offering fixed price for towbar fitting which is way above retail price of parts & even their own hourly rate for labour.
Better still, at time of order get factory towbar preparation (£170.00) a wiring loom for trailer lighting is put in at time of build to the rear of the car behind the panels, ECU / canbus is sorted at the same time. Then wires from the towbar socket is just plugged in with extra wires for battery/ fridge operation, using dedicated parts of course.
We have a Skoda Octavia Estate 62 plate. We had our usual towbar fitter come to the house to fit the towbar. Do you mean cars newer than ours? Ours functions just fine - no cofiguration needed at dealership. Am I confusing something here?
The dealer should only charge about £30 for 'chipping' the electrics following towbar fitting by a reputable fitter with dedicated electrics. I'd go for a Westfalia, but you might want to put a cheaper bar on a Skoda otherwise it could be worth more than the car!

Surprising for the new Mark 7 models, private fitting plus dealer "chipping" is the same price as dealer doing it all.
This means that at least I get the car and the towbar done at the same time.
Probably in Sussex, it is cheaper, as you are only fitting rings for the horse's harness.
I hope they discontinue the Audi Tractor Beam. I wasn't aware our Octavia had it at first until I noticed that Audi's I passed were on my bumper shortly after. Seems to be on by default & I can't figure out how to switch it off.
