As far as i can work out as i passed my test after 1997. My cars max weight on v5 states 2060kg does that mean i can tow up to 1440 mam weight as stated on the plates?? Also i have an option of using my brothers l200 v5 for it doesnt state a max weight only a kerbweight of 1875 so how will i know if im within my licence limits using it??? cheers

1440 plated MAM for the trailer is spot on

is your brothers car here - http://www.automobile-catalog.com/

If its 1875 kerb then adding 500 will not be far off GVW

Thanks for confirming that. His is a mitsubishi l200 pickup sadly its not on that website although ill keep a note of it good website. Wouldnt like to use the pickup then find out its over my weight it is a commercial vehicle and im sure it can carry up to 1 tonne in the bed towing limit is somethinf crazy like 3tonne illl need t try look at its plates at some point cheers

Also does the kerbweight play any legal factor?? Idealy dont want to be over the 85% rule but is that just a guide or a legal requirement??

No legal factor at all

It is used by many to determine a percentage between the MTPLM and kerbweight but only as a fixed figure guide

The reality advice is for the caravan not to be more than 85% of vehicle weight at the time of towing

750 kgs max MTPLM

A B vehicle with a GVW between 2750 and 3500 with a B licence can tow a trailer etc with a max MAM of 750 kgs

Thanks although doesnt really matter as i dont think we could get a van that ticks all our boxes under 750kg

You can always find the vehicles max gross weight from the weight plate on the vehicle. With your b licence simply take that figure from 3500 to find the max plated weight of trailer that you can tow.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Dont forget that some vehicles have a towing limit of less than the figures you get from those equations.

2000kg laden weight. = 1500kg max tow. But the vehicles manufacturers tow limit maybe 1300kg.

Always check the max tow also.

no worries on that front max tow on the Passat is 1800kgs
