147bhp?   200 bhp would be some remap. I presume thats a made up figure, Can they back that up with a rolling road session?

Your close to 100% to the cars kerbweight. If your happy with that then carry on.

Personally i think its a bit heavy for that car. All legal though.

One thing to beware of some auto's dont take well to remaps and other performance tweaks.

Bit heavy for me, and I hate recaps anyway.

160bhp should be OK without the remap. We get up to nearly 6 tonnes train weight on about 180bhp, so I would have thought a remap wasn't really necessary with under 4 tonnes?

147bhp for the 2010 onwards model.
Previous model was 157bhp.

Unladen kerbweight 1850kg?

I would opt for as much torque they can get at towing speed compared to an as much BHP as possible.

I still think 35bhp+ is asking a lot from a remap.

Kerbweight 1850 kls ? that would make it 98% Would the car insurance be ok? they all seem to quote the 85% guide if you ask them
When towing ours in the bad summer(and winter) of 2012 when really windy it was blowing the outfit about and our car weighs nearly 2.1/2 tonne..

You're brave....

Freelander 2? Regardless of min / max weights, more torque / BHP and ATC brakes etc...

It's quite a short wheelbased vehicle I think for towing a what sounds like a 'large' twin axle.

One wrong move, gust of wind just at the right time and in the right place, and you're jack-knifed!

Having just been in a similar situation as you my comments are as follows.

We towed a Crusader Aurora with a Jeep Cherokee Sport 2.8 CRD and whilst on paper the weights were fine and it was well matched to the Aurora with an MPTLM 1673, it gave a match on whattowcar.com of 77% and 5 green stars. I just checked the Freelander II 2.2 Auto on the Aurora and it comes in at 83% and 4 green stars.

In reality, the Jeep being the much heavier and more powerful equivalent of a Freelander never felt 'safe' towing the Aurora (that was well under on load and very well balanced with noseweight spot on) and often felt like the tail wagging the dog to the point we would not go over 50mph absolute tops.

With the 2012 Disco 4 pulling our new 2014 Supersciroco it felt totally safe and solid and no issues at all even in the wind this weekend.

Your Freelander comes in at 97% and 4 orange stars with only 1 star on the stability index. I dont think this comes down to power but weight and length of the tow car being too small and car to caravan ratio being too close. With the new IDC system on the Crusaders you may want to check how this will affect you as I guess it will be on far more than it will be off.

Dont know who your dealer is but I know that mine did a vehicle check to the van before selling to me, so would suggest you get some advice from your dealer or the Caravan club. Alternatively, ask them if you can take one out for a test drive on your car and see what happens?

Hi All,
I have a 2010 Freelander 2 HSE Auto, the mass in service is 1967kg on the V5
I am looking to purchase a twin axle caravan with a MTPLM of 1825kg.
I know it is over the 85% rule, but being a twin and with ATC fitted it will be quite stable, plus my 28 years towing experience I cant see a problem.
The freelander is 160 bhp so a remap up to just under 200 bhp should sort that.

My concern would be getting the nose weight right imo that is more important than any percentage rule.

at leebee, go for it, the Freelander will be fine, I know three Freelander 2 owners towing TA's, as you know, noseweight won't be a problem as it is more than what the van can take, a decent remap won't harm it, your still under the Max tow weight of the Freelander.

Those are my thoughts also as I think the Freelander is just too small and too light for a large twin axle of that weight even though it is legal.

Leebee1

Congratulations, glad the Freelander tows well, I use a Disco so couldn't comment on the Freelander but after seeing some of the outfits on the road recently (Mondeo and Conqueror 645) I think you will be well safe.
