I am sure someone on this brilliant forum will know the answer.
I have bought a 10 year old Mondeo estate 2.0 TDCI estate 130hp. I have scoured the hand book and looked on the internet but can't find anything that tells me what the tow limit is??
I have found this in the book.
Kerb weight = 1564
Max payload = 631
Perm gross weight = 2195
Thanks in advance.
Have a look at the weight plate just inside the door, it will give the gross train weight and max laden weight of the car. If the kerb weight is 1564 you should be aiming at 85% of this as the max weight of the caravan when laden so in this case a caravan MTPLM around 1300kg would be ideal.
The other thing to be careful with is when did you pass your driving test, if it was after 1997 your licence will be restricted and you'll have to double check weights before you can tow.
If i was you i'd take to to a weigh bridge, empty the car fill it 90% of fuel the whatever the weight shows add 75kg for the driver. that will give you the true weight as brochures are of out.
my car brochure says 1557 kgs yet the true weight is 1630 on a bridge & driver = 1705 KGS, remember the high the car spec the heavier the car is

I had a very similar car the details you have found are correct, I towed a 1450kg hymer with mine and it did a fine job. For simple peace of mind I would not have been prepared to tow anything that weighed more. The first consideration is the date of your licence, if it is since 01/01/1997 then you are restricted to a caravan that has a plated weight that when added to your cars maximum weight is no more than 3500kg, so with that car you could tow a caravan with a plated maximum of 1305kg. If your licence is dated before 1997 that restriction is not there and you eill find that on the weight plate of the car there is a figure of 3920kg and when you add together what the car actually weighs and what the caravan actually weighs the result must not be more than 3920kg. The manufacturer in its handbook for that car specifies a max towing limit of 1800kg and you woul be very unwise to exceed this.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
Thanks everyone. I will be OK then. Max weight of the caravan unladen is 960kg loaded is 1167kg. janus, I have read the hand book cover to cover and can't find a max towing limit anywhere.
Hardly dare admit it, but I passed my test in 1972!!

I swapped my mk3 for a mk4 last summer so no longer have the handbook but the limit is 1800kg. You may also be able to find it on your v5
With that licence you will have no problem with weights, with that caravan you will find towing with the Mondeo very very easy.

1800kg if the car is unladen.
Its one of those times when the max tow and max kerbweight exceed the gross train weight.
Gross train weight 3700kg? With the 2195kg gross kerbweight your left with 1505kg.
If you exceed the max train weight you commit an offence. It is a peculiarity of the way manufacturers choose to declare the weight that their vehicles will restart on a 12.5% slope that this confusion occurs. Ford dedclare that the Mondeo can restart towing an 1800 kg caravan, they also declare that the max nose weight for a mk3 mondeo is 75kg, this 75kg is carried by the car and must be included within the cars weight ( it is part of tge cars payload. As a result if tge unit is weighed as a whole it will weigh no more than the max train weight of 3920kg. One result of this is that if tge car is to be towing a caravan that has a plated weight of 1800kg it may only weigh 2120kg if is weighed on its own.
