Went to Blackwell in the peaks last weekend, first big towing trip.
Once we got back checked the trip computer on the car and it registered that it had done 22 mpg.
My question is, is that normal mpg for the peaks in a petrol fueled 4x4 .
My cr-v did struggle up some of the inclines but there were some good hills on the way.
If the 22 mpg is going to be the norm, then I'll be looking for a petrol station every 200 miles.

I would say 22mpg is pretty good for petrol 4x4. Same car with diesel would be in low 30s mpg I would guess.

What's your outfit / setup, (which car + van = weight?)
Petrol 4x4? Is it not worth a LPG conversion?

Sorry, I'm driving at 2.0ltr Honda Crv and pulling a sterling Eccles topaz max weight 1380, but probably only loaded to about 1350.

I used to tow a lightweight caravan with an MTPLM of 1000 kgs. with a 1.8 petrol Vauxhall Zafira and used to get around 23-24 mpg. so eventually I changed to a Ford Focus estate 1.6 diesel. Towing the same caravan provided 38 mpg. down the M5 on a trip around 150 miles and on return I got 35 mpg. and that was probably due to wind direction. However, I noticed a huge difference by applying the recommended tyre pressures towing as when I forgot to increase the pressures I got just over 30 mpg. so the proof is that the correct tyre pressures as recommended in your handbook play a major role in obtaining the maximum mpg. but judging that you were towing with a 4x4 petrol vehicle I would consider that quite good actually.

YOu must have a bag of cement on the throttle, we towed with an A4 Avant 2.0 tdi for years and never got less than 26-27 and often 30 and I don't hang around!

That's cruising at 60. I think it's the auto, I only achieve 34 without the caravan.

I had the same thoughts - I get 30 from my A6 2.7 Tdi, dragging 1500kg of 'van. But mine is manual box, so it may be something to do with the auto box.

Mine was auto. With the A6 we now have I get 30-32 if I stick with 50 and 60, drops to 27 towing in France, bit faster progress and more loaded up generally.
For the OP I would think 21 was reasonable towing with a 2litre petrol 4x4.

I live in Derbyshire hills and they do make a difference to mpg especially when towing but even when not towing. Like others I think your mpg is respectable at least.

I tow my VW Touran 1.9 TDI at near to its maximum trailer weight of 1500kg. Fuel consumption averages around 28 - 32 mpg. Variations will depend on wind direction, hills, delays and any low gear crawling due to traffic congestion.
I take the same view as Pete, above. You can't expect to hang an extra 1.5 Tonnes on the bumper and still get an mpg anywhere near to solo towing.
Bertie.

Cheers all for the feedback, after much Internet searching on autotrader , I have decided to change to a diesel motor, that will give me more power and mpg.
Will be picking the new motor up new week.
