Hi all

I have just purchased a new vehicle my old vehicle number plate is still on the van.I have just ordered a replacement number plate which came today however it is the adhesive stick on type not the solid plastic type ( my own fault for not reading item properly). My question is can I stick the adhesive plate on top of my old plate by law.

No, legally you have to have a proper plate made up by a supplier who should check car reg. doc. & insurance. You might get away with a stick on plate or you might get a fixed penalty if a cop spots it & has nothing better to do. If it is a proper plastic plate from an ebay supplier then still not strictly legal because they have supplied it without checking car docs but as probably nobody can tell the difference once you have it, its ok.

There is no reason why you can't providing the new number is clearly visible and the old number is totally obscured. However, you could have to answer some awkward questions if you are stopped by the police and could end up getting arrested if they aren't satisfied with your replies. Probably better to get the old one off.

Having read the previous posting that has reminded me that the number plate does have to display a contactable address and postcode (I believe) of the supplier. This link should help.

As long as its clear and visible. The right colour and the Font looks close to the correct one you wont have any issues.

But you are probably breaking the Law on both the correct identification marks on the plate, and if it is a stick-on plate the incorrect reflectivity.

So just buy a proper LEGAL plate.

The current regs state that the plate must be correct lettering and numbering, ie type, spacing etcetera. The plate must bear the BS number, manufacturers name and postcode. The reflective material must also comply with regs. If you wish to stick the new one on top,of the old to save hassle in removing the old one there is nothing to stop you doing this but be prepared to be asked questions by the police if and when you are stopped as this a technique used by thieves

Stick on plates are only legal if they were fitted prior to 1st September 2001, otherwise you will need to obtain the current legal version for your vehicle. See dvla details here
I would have thought the sellers ad would have advised something to this effect, if not then you should be able to claim for mis-selling the item, and obtain a full refund. If you bought over the net, then save a copy of their ad by printing it as a back up for any claim.

I've just read this disclaimer from one ad on ebay "All plates are sold as "show use" and/or "off road use" and intended for Track Days, Car Shows etc, therefore we cannot be held responsible for illegal use of these plates on the road", from a seller advertising stick on plates.

And lastly one important factor to remember....only certain logos/flags are permitted.
Flags and national identifying letters
You can display one of the following flags with identifying letters on the left-hand side of the number plate:

Union Flag
Cross of St George
Cross of St Andrew (also known as the Saltire)
Red Dragon of Wales
The letters, or national identifiers, you can have are:

GREAT BRITAIN, Great Britain or GB
UNITED KINGDOM, United Kingdom or UK
CYMRU, Cymru, CYM or Cym
ENGLAND, England, ENG, Eng
SCOTLAND, Scotland, SCO or Sco
WALES or Wales
So car / van badges / football clubs are not permitted.

I have just had to change my caravans number plate, and ordered one online from a company who advertised their plates as being fully road legal british standard plates, but it still arrived with sticky pads to fix it to my caravan, and the only other writing printed on it is the BS number and the makers name, but no postcode.

Its a solid plastic plate, as was the one that l removed which had been slormed up with caravan mastic to attach it to my new caravan from my old one by the dealer last year, and it took us bliddy ages to clean the mastic off the caravans back pannel before we could fit the new one. Theres no way that l would try to drill through the caravans back pannel to attach a plate with screws, so for us, the stick on type are the only option.

As far as im aware, my new car has also got stick on plates fitted by the dealer, theres certainly no screw heads showing anyway.

Did you send any documents to the supplier to verify your vehicle reg is correct etc?

All uk suppliers MUST be registered with the DVLA . Anyone supplying " road legal plates" who isn't,   commits an offence.
Registered dealers can be checked via DVLA website....

I did exactly the same , when the envelope came I thought this can't be a number plate. I needed a single plate for a friend to borrow my caravan for a few days so I just stuck it over the plate on the van.

If you want to be 100% legal then no, you cannot use your sticker number plates.

To be fully compliant you must obtain a rigid plastic number plate from a registered supplier to whom you must supply details verifying your right to the plate. This can be stuck on by whatever means you wish, screw, glue or nailed on!

Saying that I do see several trailers and caravans with no plates, homemade plates,"show plates" and even bits of cardboard taped in the window plates and have never heard of anyone getting prosecuted but you could be.

I have searched the legislation and can't find anything that says number plates have to be a rigid plastic. All I can find is that they need to be a reflective material. They do, however, have to be obtained from a registered supplier who is unlikely to provide anything other than rigid plastic plates.

If I remember correctly when I bought a number plate for my caravan from Halfords I asked about stick on ones and was told they didn't supply them but I still can't find anything that says they are illegal providing they comply with the rules re size and details on them etc.

If anyone has a link to an official website that states they have to be rigid I would be interested to read it.

We have used number plates from ebay suppliers and have never had any issues with anyone. Never got stopped, never had any issues with ANPR etc.

As far as sticking it on top of an old one, that's probably inviting trouble, but what are the chances of being pulled? Very slim.

All DVLA say is that you can only get a number plate from a DVLA registered supplier, but in practice there are plenty selling them online.

The old fashioned flexible sticker number plates fail the Legislation on 2 counts:
not the correct reflectivity
not the correct BS number or even no BS number
