My outfit is a Swift 2010 4 berth and tow car 2010 diesel Passat estate.

I'm getting lots n lots of mixed opinions regards distribution of the weights....ie clothes, waste, water and other things needed for your hols.

The dealer told me to put awning over axle and other heavy items then lighter stuff in car. Dealer said that Swift tows better with weight in it. Then other people tell me to fully load the car...which I've done but I didn't like the drive and the car seemed to struggle and the caravan and car on the rroad seemed to see saw a little....

Is there a hard fast rule or is it trial and error depending on the outfit .... ?

Does anyone have a similar outfit that has mastered it...

My van weighs roughly with my items 1380kg and my car 1572kg 2.0 diesel 140bhp

Awning and heavy stuff over the axle. Treat yourself to a noseweight gauge to check noseweight ( 5 to 7% of MTPLM). Lighter things mid height in cupboards. The Practical Caravan mag has diagrams to show you how to load. I learned on the CC towing course, which I thoroughly recommend.

Greetings,
Over the 10 yrs that we tugged we tried every combination known to man.
We tried loading the car with all the heavy stuff, including, on one occasion, the spare wheel from the 'van.

In the end, because the 'van, treated in isolation was loaded in the correct manner, it made not a jot to to MPG.
On the other hand, providing that you do not overload the towing vehicle (and that includes the passengers as well as the caravanning load) and load the car safely, you will get better stability because you are decreasing the ratio at which you tow which will make for a safer outfit.
Most modern cars benefit from having a load to carry. It's no use filling the 'van to it's maximum leaving the car empty. That only increases your weight ratio's which in the event of an 'incident' could increase your risk of being unable to control the outfit

The other thing to check is the tyre pressures on the car. Several of the cars we have used recommend increasing the tyre pressures when towing and this has made quite a difference to the feel of the outfit.

I tow with a VAG car built on the Passat body shell Skoda Superb and a Swift van MTLP 1350kg I have found Tyre pressures are critical and nose weight as close to 75kg as possible,So heavy items over the van axle and boot moderately loaded works best.

Nose weight gauge?

Don't bother, I don't trust them anymore after comparing them to a set of bathroom scales, and using a piece of measured pole to meet the tow hitch.

I found the nose gauges to be 'around' 20kgs out!!

Putting the weighty stuff over the axle is good advice for the van, but I reckon that in the car the best place to put the heaviest items is mid-way between the front & rear axles (O.K. do the best you can).

The back end of the car is going to be weighed down with the van's noseweight (the static value, plus lots & lots of transient loading when you hit bumps etc.) and then there's the weight of all that stuff you stuck in the boot.

All in all I think your car's rear suspension has a lot riding on it, so shift the heavy stuff a bit further forward.

P.S. Noseweight gauges are useful because fiddling around with some bathroom scales and a stick is a pita. Most gauges are crep, so get the Milenco - costs more but it's the only one that works reliably.

Get it weighed. Your estimate of about 1380kg maybe wide of the mark.

Noseweight as close to the cars maximimum as you can get. But you need a reliable calibrated gauge. The cheap ones are rubbish.

My cars max is 75kg and it tows much better with the weight over 70kg.

Under 70 and it wiggles more when towing, Despite being a 75% match to the car.

What you need to know is that your car is 1572 and which I assume is the kerb weight. So your caravan needs to be no more than 1336 when loaded. You say that you load up to 1380 so you are towing at 87%. You will be aware that the recommendation is an 85% ratio and which 1336 is. Perhaps being at 87% may explain the towing problem....perhaps not as its only 2% above.

Once you get the weights right with the van then think about what you are doing. You are going on holiday. You are taking it easy, relaxing.

So, the way you are loading, you get on site and the first thing you do is to take everything out of the van because that is outside stuff -awning- waste hog etc. Then you have to move everything from the car to the van because all the inside stuff is outside in the car.

Once you have moved the outside stuff from inside to outside and the inside stuff from outside to inside then the Lady can get on with putting everything that should be inside in the inside cupboards.

Once you have all the outside stuff from the inside you can then get on with putting up the outside stuff outside.

Wouldn't it be easier to carry the inside stuff inside (wife has an easier job sorting out the inside once on site) and you can take stuff out of the car a bit at a time as you set up the outside.

Because the little lady has an easier job sorting out the inside she has time to pour you a beer whilst you set up the outside

It's a holiday after all....make it easier for when you get there. Load the outside stuff in the car

Phil

Milenco noseweight gauges at around £40 are accurate to within 1%
