I am due to tow from Anglesey down to Fishguard. Its the top bit that concerns me as it appears that if I take the A4085 it goes through the Snowdon National Park and may be hilly and twisty. Or use the A487 which goes around the park. Has anyone any experience of these routes and which is best

I have towed down through Machynlleth, Aberystwyth and then down the west coast. This was with our previous van which was quite light and it was ok. It is a good road between Caernarfon and Porthmadog.

Don't use the A4085 but go west to Caernarfon, then Porthmadog A487 till it joins the A470, then A470 to dollgellau then take the A487 the rest of the way. There is a hilly bit between Dollgellau and Machynlleth.

Avoid the 4085 when towing, it's almost single track in places and really needs to be re-classified to a B road

Thanks for the info. I did look on Google street view at the 4085 and yes it was virtually a single track

I work around Anglesey and North snowdonia and am involved in hauling timber and oversized loads....and know the a4085 well! I would agree avoid it. Towing a caravan, I'd advise leaving early and sticking to the a487. Much of it has been improved over the years and is a joy to drive when there's little traffic around hence why I say leave early!   If you leave at 5am you should be Aberystwyth by 8 and there is parking opposite police HQ for lorries/buses etc. only a short walk into town for breakfast on the beach :)
