Hi all

Been offered a Ford Explorer to replace my ageing Patrol.

Unfortunately I know naff all about these, so, do any of you own one, whats your opinion of them?

Are they a decent 4x4 or just a Mickey Mouse job?

I'm interested to know whether they are permanent 4 wheel drive or selectable part time. Also if they are permanent do they have a central diff lock?

What did you get for mpg?

The only way I would consider a petrol vehicle with this size engine was if it was on lpg.

This one is, 50% cheaper

we had a 4 litre jeep which is a comparable engine. Your engine would get 0  ish around towns etc and towing would be a laugh. Forget it

Why not get a diesel car your van has a max weight of 1400kg so there are plenty out there that will tow in the mid 30s

Thanks Bob, but we really need a biggish 4X4

Were out in the sticks (Lincolnshire Wolds, and a bit exposed). Roads get left in winter and wifey uses it for work all week.

Feel a lot happier knowing she not going to get stuck if it snows during the day.

I also pull a large heavy trailer along woodland tracks.

I had one of these beasts cheap to buy lot of kit for the money,mine ran on lpg could get it down to 9mpg with a heavy right foot or 18 on a run great fun though

Skoda scout 4x4 tdi will do everything you need, and still return good MPG, a few members on here have them, they have plenty of ground clearance and can tow up to 1600 kg
