Thought i would start a new thread,Im going to look at a jeep grand cherokee next week if its not sold.it is a 2006 model with 3ltr engine. So my questions are,Does the auto box need a cooler fitting,Are there any bad points to look for on these and are they reliable.Insurance is pretty good and im sure at 215 bhp it will pull 2 caravans. If i took it easy i would expect to get 23mpg towing. Thanks in advance for any answers

Hi

Made a comment in your earlier post but I had a 2007 GC.

Excellent tow car and mine was reliable with the exception of the tyre valves which can leak / corrode and fall apart.

Main point to check is that its had a full service history. The engine oil needs changing every 12500 miles and the gearbox and diferential oils every 25000 miles. If its not done it can impact on the reliability. If there is a problem it will be noticable when you put it in drive and there is a delay before it starts to move when you hit the gas.

Check out which road tax it is. The rules changed and some 2006 models span between £250 and £475.

They are also not the most econmical of vehicles. Mine used to average 25 mpg which was a mixture of motorway and town driving, Towing was about 20 mpg with our 1500 kg Pegasus on the back.

However all said they are excellent tow cars, especially if you end up on a muddy field!

Any questions feel free to ask.

3L ?   2.8CRD you mean? Its fairly thirsty and not very refined.

If your towing a 250kg camping trailer you will get 23mpg. Towing a caravan i would have thought under 20mpg.

As above tax maybe in excess of £400 a year. Not the best engine in a 4x4.

2005 onward is a very refined merc 3.0l V6 with a merc derived 5 speed auto gearbox as the Jeep Grand Cherokee shared the same platform as the Merc ML of that time.

Everything else was Jeep derived and a bit low rent but the mechanics are spot on if well cared for.

Economy wise is as my original post which is based on 5 years of owning and 3 years of towing with one.

yes,my musso is a merc engine and its bullet proof, just lacks power on hills, the 2006 jeep is 215 bhp and a merc engine as in chrysler 300.And from what i see there are few problems .I have spoken to people on site who tow with these and they love them. And being american im sure they are good tanks,i love american cars.Especially at the side of dinky toy crap we get.Such as suzuki jimmy and toyota rav 4.pretent 4x4 or hairdressers cars.I like dodge and chevvy blazer but being petrol would need a tanker following. But then the yanks dont have a greedy bastard government like us.

No,i mean 3 ltr crd grand jeep cherokee.Same engine as chrysler 300,and they are smooth.merc engine and american.Better than most s**t sold in uk.tax is 280 a year, insurance is same as my musso at 250 a year. Please do your homework before making comments.I have looked on net, asked people on sites and read parkers reviews etc, they seem like good cars.Anything thing with rover in the title i will dismiss, they are crap.

I have owned our jeep commander (same car different dress) for 6 years
MPG around Huddersfield which is quite hilly I get around 20/22 Towing the same but motorways it can get up to 25 and that's towing a twin axle conqueror
I have it serviced every year and the transfer box, axles oil every 2 years Gearbox oil and filter once during ownership I have never had any gearbox overheating problems and we tow all summer Having said that we only do around 7k a year
Check to see if the turbo to air cleaner pipe has been changed (the early ones leaked) straight on to the exhaust swirl port motor causing an expensive failure The only breakdown we have had was a failure of the crankshaft sensor which I understand can happen to any car Also check if TPMS is fitted that it works as the valves in the wheels are metal and they do corrode you can buy a service kit for the tyre valves saving the need to buy the sensor as well
