Hi Everyone!!

Looking to purchase a newer caravan but can't figure out which is best to suit.

Fixed bunks (2 only as 3 fixed seems too small between each bunk)
Separate shower cubicle.

We tow with a VW Passat (130bhp) (1800 braked) and been visiting loads and loads of different makes and models and now seen a few twin axles which are lower MIRO than some of the single axles so for that past weeks I been thinking that a twin would be too much for the VW.

Do other people tow a twin axle with a (standard family car) ?? I have used the what tow to work out what I can safely tow but I am just getting 86 - 89% ratio.
Do other peoples outfit exceed the 85% ratio??

Thanks

You need to work out your towing ratio on the MTPLM not MIRO, so your ratio may be higher.

I have towed to 93% without a stabiliser.without any problem. I would prefer to be lower though for peace of mind.and a more relaxed journey. Need to be on your toes at that ratio and if something goes wrong all of a sudden..........

Some vans are more stable than others. So much depends on where the weight is.

What are you working your 86 - 89% ratio on the cars max tow or the cars unladen kerbweight which is teh figure you should be using.

The Passat may weigh under 1600kg despite the 1800kg tow limit. Exact model/spec/year?

Its not just the towing a modern 130bhp diesel will have bags of torque to tow up most hills. The weight on the caravan on the way down maybe an issue.

But the other issue is manouvring the caravan it can be a clutch killing exercise in a car thats fairly high geared.

Thats why 4x4s work better with a stronger clutch and lower gearing.

i have a twin axel lunar and i would recommend a 4x4.But whatever, the car must weigh more than the caravan or it will be unstable. Most cars may pull it but they have to stop it safely aswell. Also if pulling a twin and you want to get up hills quicker than a cyclist i would say min 150 bhp
