Are these good tow cars, the ones I've looked at are the 2 litre 173bhp tekna?

They seem to be well regarded on here. I have test driven one, was quite impressed.

Someone will probably come on and say why do you need a 4 x4 when you could ahve a well known Czech made VW!!!

The 2L xtrail is 171bhp and lacks low end torque for towing, its great solo, but put 1565kg on the hook and you notice the difference, even with 266 pound feet of torque at 2K.
That was my experience over 4.5 years of ownership, the Renault engine was 100% reliable.

The T30 2.2 Nissan engine version is actually better at delivering low end torque. I ran one for 4.5 years.
Both are good cars to drive.

The Mazda CX-5 twin turbo blows the xtrail away however when it comes to towing, delivering 175ps and 420nm at 2K revs. Only draw back is the 88kg nose weight limit.

I should point out the 2.2 was in fact a Nissan engine.
The later 2L is a Renault engine.

Of the two the 2L Renault has fewer problems.

If buying a 2L T31 buy from 2009, earlier models had DPF lights coming on, my 2009 never did.

If buying the 2.2 T30 then buy from 2004 or later.
Over 2004 to 2013 both mine were 100% reliable, only the T30 had to have a new intercooler in the first year, due to a design fault.
